There is no Indian dish that a dollop of ghee cannot make more delicious. There is also no book of Ayurveda that hasn’t spoken of the many health benefits of the clarified butter packed with good fats and minerals.

But do you know that ghee can be directly applied to the hair and is as beneficial for your precious mane as it is for your overall health when eaten in moderation? Yes, you read that right!

Ladies, it’s time to get over fancy oils with fancier promises giving you healthier, heavier hair and cash in on the following benefits of ghee for your hair:

1. It can boost your hair growth
If the whole purpose of following a hair care regime for you is to achieve and flaunt a heavier mane, ghee can seal the deal for you.

“Hair oils can be replaced with ghee for head massages. When massaged on the scalp, it increases blood circulation and thus, helps boost hair growth,” says Dr. Jeet Gore, senior consultant trichologist, Trica Hair Clinic, Mumbai.

2. Ghee can nourish and hydrate your scalp like no other
Being a rich source of omega-3 and omega-9 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid, vitamin A, vitamin D, carotenoids, and several minerals, it boosts healthy cell growth on the scalp by nourishing it deeply with these nutrients.

3. It can help fight dandruff off
Ghee is also packed with antioxidants, which help fight free radicals or any bacterial or fungal infections on the scalp. It also relieves you of a dry, itchy, or flaky scalp resulting from the lack of moisture in the scalp skin.

“To combat dandruff problem, mix 2 tablespoons of ghee with 1 teaspoon of almond oil, and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply the mixture on the scalp, keep it on for an hour, and rinse it with a mild shampoo. Do this once a week in the summer, twice a week in the winter, and once in a fortnight if you have an oily scalp,” Gore suggests.

4. Ghee can give you a shinier, healthy-looking mane
From split ends to coarseness to fizziness, ghee can solve all your dry-hair problems by nourishing your scalp and hair follicle as well as the length of your hair, helping it regain its lost moisture. The result of this deep conditioning is just a shinier and a healthier-looking mane.

Take 3-4 teaspoons of ghee in 1 teaspoon of olive oil and 1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel. Apply the mixture on the scalp as well as the length of your hair, keep it on for 1-2 hours and rinse it with a mild shampoo. In fact, ghee can also be applied directly on the scalp and hair, massaged gently, and kept overnight to combat hair dryness and fizziness,” says Gore.

Just a word of caution
Shampoo your hair thoroughly after applying ghee as it remains stuck to the scalp or hair even after washing and can clog the pores of your scalp or make your hair more oily.

Turns out, mom’s advice of that one teaspoon of ghee being healthy is absolutely right, not just for the body but also for the hair!
