Women are complicated. But you know what’s even more complicated than us? Our hair loss patterns.

We say this because we tend to lose hair due to a plethora of reasons–ranging from using chemical-laden and hair damaging styling products to dandruff from dry weather and even nutritional deficiencies.

For the uninitiated, it’s normal to lose anywhere between 50 to 100 strands of hair every day, as per the American Academy of Dermatologists. However, if you’re crossing this number, it’s time to figure out the cause of your hair loss.

Let’s start by decoding the most complicated reason why you could be losing hair: hormones. Wondering whether that’s the case with you? Here are some signs to look out for:

You’re experiencing weakness and sudden weight fluctuations

If your hair loss is accompanied by these problems, then your thyroid levels could be to blame. According to the British Thyroid Foundation, both hyperthyroidism (a condition in which the body produces thyroid hormones in excess) and hypothyroidism (a condition in which the body produces inadequate thyroid hormones) can lead to hair loss.

How to deal with it: The good news is that thyroid-related hair loss comes to a halt once your hormones are under-control. So if you suspect a thyroid imbalance in your case, visit a doctor immediately.

Facial hair, acne, and irregular periods are accompanying your hair loss

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a condition in which a woman’s body produces androgens (male hormones) in excess and can create small cysts in and around the ovaries.

This can lead to thinning of hair, hair loss, excessive hair growth on the face, and excessive acne. So if you have all these symptoms, then there are high chances that you’re suffering from PCOS.

How to deal with: Well, start by leading a healthy lifestyle that includes eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly to keep PCOS under control. Also, consult your gynaecologist who might suggest medications upon relevant testing.

You have just had a baby

If you are losing hair post-delivery, you can breathe a sigh of relief as this hair loss is temporary. A sudden drop in the levels of oestrogen and progesterone in the body during the postpartum phase, can cause your hair to fall.

How to deal with it: Thankfully, within six to 12 months of delivery your hormones will get back to normal and the excessive hair loss will stop. So don’t fret and gorge on fruits, nuts, fresh vegetables, and a lot of protein in the meanwhile.

You’re stressed out

If you are overworked, overwhelmed, and wound up, then it’s safe to say that stress is wreaking havoc on your body. Cortisol, also known as the stress hormone, can also lead to hair loss amongst other things.

How to deal with it: When it comes to eliminating stress, nothing works better than exercise. Additionally, managing your time better, taking vacations, and meditating are all good ways to keep your stress levels under control.

Additionally, home remedies such as washing your hair with fermented rice water or massaging your scalp with onion juice or castor oil can help boost hair growth too.
