As soon as winter starts, it immediately starts affecting the health of our hair and skin. Cold and dry winter winds can make the hair dry, brittle and lead to severe breakage and hair fall. Cold weather can also dry the scalp causing flakiness, dandruff, itching, and irritation.

Apart from the weather conditions, we even make certain mistakes that can make the hair condition even more damaged.

7 mistakes that you should avoid to protect your hair this winter season:

1. Wrong shampoo

We use shampoo to keep our scalp and hair clean and healthy. If this hair product is chosen wrong, it can lead to severe hair loss. When we shampoo our hair, it goes into the scalp affecting the roots. Therefore, it is necessary whatever shampoo we use should be mild and suitable enough to maintain healthy hair growth. Hence, choose your shampoo wisely.

2. Insufficient cleansing

During winter, most people usually avoid cleansing the hair and scalp sufficiently. The prolonged duration of not cleaning the hair can lead to the clogging of scalp pores and hair follicles. The clogging of dirt, dust, and oil on the scalp causes scalp irritation, itching, and hair fall. So, make sure you cleanse your hair and scalp sufficiently and from time to time.

3. Not conditioning properly

Hair conditioning during winter is as important as moisturizing the skin. In cold weather, your hair tends to lose its nourishment. To keep the hair and scalp nourished, conditioners are required after every time you shampoo your hair. Conditioners help the hair to regain their lost moisture. It keeps the hair frizz-free, soft and smooth and it gets easier to manage the hair. For deep conditioning, you can also apply the hair oil and leave it for up to 2 hours.

4. Using hot water for head wash

Hot water instantly affects the hair adversely. Using hot water to wash the hair can weaken the hair roots, make the hair brittle and damage the hair follicles. Hot water dehydrates the scalp and it also loses the natural oils. Always use lukewarm water to wash your hair. Warm water helps to get rid of any build-up, dirt, and grime. It also stimulates the flow of blood that encourages hair growth.

5. Excessive use of heating tools

Using a hair dryer or heating tools excessively can lead to severe hair dryness. Frequent use of heat styling tools can make the hair lose its conditioning and natural oils. This eventually causes hair breakage and damage. This can also cause hair thinning. Use a hairdryer at low temperatures so that hair does not lose the natural oils in them.

6. Avoid chemical treatments during winters

Winters are already harsh and dry for the hair and scalp. During this weather, if you get any chemical treatments such as hair colour it can cause more dryness to hair, weaken hair roots that can lead to excessive hair loss. Avoid getting hair treatments or hair colour during the cold weather.

7. Do not wear a beanie for long hours

Wearing a beanie for long hours can not only flatten your hair, but also block the scalp from breathing. When the scalp is not able to get the fresh air, it gets blocked with dirt, dust, or sebum. It causes hair to lose nourishment and makes the hair roots weak and hair follicles damaged. Therefore, it is advised to not wear a beanie for a longer time.
