We Indians share a pretty special bond with our tea. Our wake-up call in the morning, the most important pal during office breaks, and romantic partner on rainy evenings—imagining a life without chai is pretty much impossible for most us. And since we love our tea so much, we also know how pretty great it is for our health. But did you know that tea can also stop hair loss?

Pretty surprising right? Of all the things we know our daily chai can do, most of us couldn’t have even imagined that it makes the perfect topical home remedy for hair loss.

Now before you rush to the kitchen to put on a pot of masala chai to dunk your hair in, let us tell you that it is black tea which has the potential here—and not your usual adrak variety.

Science says black tea can legit prevent hair loss
One of the most prominent reasons for hair loss is dihydrotestosterone or DHT. This hormone not only contributes to male-pattern baldness, but is also the reason why women with hormonal imbalances like PCOS end up experiencing hair loss.

Now many studies claim—including one published in the International Journal of Trichology in 2012—that can black tea can stop hair loss at a molecular level. There is scientific evidence to suggest that this could be because black tea, when consumed, can reduce DHT production thus slowing down shedding and stopping hair loss in its tracks.

So how can you make use of black tea to stop hair loss?
Well, drinking it is clearly one way. However, you can use black tea as a conditioning rinse to give your hair the much needed nourishment and prevent hair loss.

Ayurvedic health coach, Dimple Jangda suggests boiling 2 teaspoons of tea leaves in water to make the rinse. Filter, let it cool down, and rinse your hair with the concoction after you’re done shampooing. This rinse is nutritious and bursting with microbes, suggests Jangda.

It can make your hair shiny, healthy, and dark straight, she adds. So folks, now that you know just how glorious your chai can be when it comes to preventing hair loss—or even stopping it in its tracks—do give this hair hack a chance and let us know how it worked out for you in the comments below.
