Ever since we were kids, our grandmothers would catch hold of us for a good old champi session. They educated us about the wonders of regular oil massages pretty early on. We have definitely not forgotten about the ritual of hair oiling as adults!

You might have the best-rated shampoos and the most expensive conditioners, but nothing really beats the goodness of oiling your tresses. It not only nourishes your scalp and hair but also adds the much-needed lustre to your mane.

You will, however, need to know how to do it the right way in order to make the most out of hair oiling. Here are 6 things to keep in mind the next time you’re pampering yourself with a champi:

1. Scalp massage

Just applying oil to your scalp and strands is not enough. You must massage it properly to improve absorption, ensuring your tresses get truly nourished. When you gently use your fingertips to massage your scalp, the oil will penetrate deep into the hair shaft, and improve blood circulation. If you do this regularly, you will have thick and lustrous hair within a few months.

2. Be picky about the oils you choose

Again, hair oiling is not just about mindlessly applying anything to your hair. Not all oils work in the same manner. In case you want your hair to grow thick, then use bhringraj oil. If it’s the length of hair that’s on your mind, then use almond oil. Neem oil is good for an oily scalp that is covered with dandruff. There’s also olive oil that is beneficial for dull and damaged hair.

In fact, you can make your own potion, depending on your requirement. Just add some herbs like hibiscus petals, methi seeds, curry leaves, rosemary or even chopped onions to your oil. You might think it sounds odd, but their nutrients add a power-packed punch to boost hair health!

3. Cover your head after applying oil

You might have seen some people covering their heads after oiling their hair. No, it’s not that they are fussy; they do it because there are some great benefits of doing this. Oils prefer warmth and when you cover your head with a shower cap, it helps the oil to penetrate deep into the scalp.

4. Use a cotton bud or toothbrush to apply oil

You can use your fingertips to massage your scalp, but try using any of these tools when you’re applying the oil. They will help you spread the oil evenly on your scalp and strands. Start by parting your hair from above one ear, moving the parting towards the other ear, and making sure to cover your entire head.

5. You don’t need to leave the oil on overnight

We’ve often been told that the hair oil needs to be left on all night, but this is only a myth. When you leave the oil on for too long, it attracts a lot of dirt and grime. Now, that’s not good for your hair! Just keep the hair oil on for an hour, and you’ll see results.

6. Use a hot towel

Ever noticed how the professionals at salons steam the hair after applying a hair potion? The heat opens up the hair cuticles, improving absorption. Just wrap a hot towel around your head after oiling, making the entire exercise more effective.

Ladies, with these simple tips, you’ll see just how effective the simple process of oiling the hair oiling can be!
