All of us love a shiny, thick and strong mane that defines much of our facial structure. But how do we get this without the harmful effects of shampoos, conditioners, and chemicals?

Yogurt is your answer! Women in India, for centuries, used only buttermilk or diluted yogurt to wash their hair which helped them have dark, strong, and long hair up to their later years. Back in the day, women seldom complained of problems like dandruff, itchy scalp, or even chronic hair loss which unfortunately has now become a modern-day malady.

How to use yogurt to effectively cleanse and care for your hair?
Take a few teaspoons of yogurt, dilute in half a glass of water, beat it well, and use it as a shampoo to cleanse your scalp. You can even use the rich buttermilk fluids extracted after churning butter to cleanse your scalp and moisturise your hair.

Yoghurt has active bacterial enzymes that treat dandruff, itchy scalp, and cleanses your scalp well. It also moisturises your hair and locks the natural oils in, giving a natural shine to your mane.

Please note: it is advisable to use only room temperature, drinking water to rinse your hair clean. Tap water nowadays contains a lot of chlorine or fluoride, and when we use hot water to wash our hair, the roots open up and absorb these chemicals from the water. Combined with the ill effects of chemicals from shampoos, it leads to chronic hair loss.

You could also make hair masks with yogurt
Use yogurt as a base and add a variety of kitchen ingredients for added health benefits.

For shiny hair: Take a few teaspoons of yoghurt, add a crushed strawberry, and whip it well. Apply this on your scalp and work your way up to the roots to give your hair that extra shine.

For chronic dandruff issues: Add lemon juice and vinegar to a bowl of yoghurt, apply to your scalp and leave it on for 20-30 minutes.

For chronic hair loss: Add a few teaspoons of olive oil to yoghurt to prevent hair loss. The astringent tightening quality of olives will fortify and strengthen your hair roots.

For dry hair: Simply add 1 teaspoon of honey to a bowl of yoghurt and leave it on your scalp for 30 minutes.
