It’s raining fire, folks! As we turn into a ‘tandoori human’ due to the scorching summer sun, we need more ways to provide respite to our lovely and delicate skin. Upcoming summer months can get extremely hot and humid resulting in stickiness and a feeling of discomfort. The temperature is soaring, and the one thing you can do to keep yourself cool is wearing the right type of clothes. Your fashion needs might push you to wear synthetic fabrics, but imagine reeking of sweat and skin rashes that you can’t stop scratching like a baboon. Yikes! This raises the need for the best fabrics for skin and hair during summer.

Health Shots spoke to Dr Monica Kapoor, a celebrity cosmetologist, to list us some fabric choices that can save our skin and hair from the wrath of summer heat.

Dr Kapoor says, “While you may only think cotton to be the savior, there are a few more fabrics that can help you feel more at ease during this season that are breathable, durable, and comfortable clothing. These are cooling fabrics for skin and hair and prevent summer rashes, allergies, acne and redness.”

Here are the best fabrics for skin and hair in summer:

1. Linen

Linen is made from flax fibers and is naturally breezy. This fabric is everyone’s favourite due to its durability and ventilating and bacteria resistant qualities. Linen is one of the oldest fabrics in the world and has microscopic breaks within its weave. This subtly massages and exfoliates the skin as we move in them. Because of the lack of fiber elasticity, it protects your skin from the summer heat and wicks moisture. It’s also extremely light weight, simple to clean and superb fabric for skin and hair.

2. Hemp

Yes, you can wear clothes made from cannabis. Hemp is a carbon warrior when it comes to its low maintenance production and soil benefiting qualities. Its clothing is not only sustainable but a more affordable option as compared to pure linen. Hemp cloth has one of the strongest natural fibers and is known for its versatility and wearability. It saves you from UV rays since its threads are tightly woven and no harmful rays pass through it. Hemp fibers soften with each wash and keep your skin comfortable and rash free. Lastly, hemp is a toxin-free cloth which is microbial resistant naturally and won’t let skin-harming bacteria thrive on it. Hemp as a fabric is porous and absorbs sweat in summer.

3. Cotton

Cotton fabric is one of the most popular natural fabrics that is 100 percent hypoallergenic, breathable and won’t irritate the skin. The reason that it is breathable is due to the fabric’s tiny hollow gaps within its threads. This helps them to easily consume and expel perspiration. Cotton fabrics allow air to flow through the fibers and keep the body cool by wicking away sweat.

“Cotton’s porous nature absorbs sweat efficiently, dries and won’t react with sweat even when the weather gets hot. This quality prevents skin-harming bacteria from thriving on your skin. It helps in staying protected against rashes, allergies and backne. Cotton is a versatile fabric with awesome varieties like flannel, muslin, terry cloth, sateen, gauze, velveteen, and sailcloth.” says Dr Kapoor, who is also the director at FLAWLESS Cosmetic clinics and ILACAD Institute.

4. Silk

Silk is a fantastic summer fabric. It has antibacterial properties and a natural protein structure that allows for easy ventilation. Silk is often thought to be a climate fabric because of its ability to regulate temperature. The fabric also absorbs moisture, allowing the skin to breathe, and is appropriate for all summer occasions. Silk is hypoallergenic and ensures your skin doesn’t break out. You must have likely heard of switching to a silk instead of a cotton one. Well, it’s true. The negative-ion generating properties of natural fibers of silk prevent frizz and dryness of hair and keeps your skin fresh, hydrated and wrinkle-resistant. This makes silk, one of the prefect fabrics for skin and hair health.

5. Lawn cloth

This is a light fabric that is semi-sheer and woven in linen and cotton. The finish used on lawn cloth can be soft, semi-crisp, or crisp. The fabric is known for its semi-transparency and quick drying quality that will not let sweat stick to your skin for longer. Dr Kapoor suggests choosing dresses made with lawn cloth that is created with high-thread-count yarns. It will give a silky smooth feel to your skin and won’t cling on to your body giving that airy and fresh feel to your skin.
