No one loves puffy eyes, because it acts as such a dampener! And those high-end cosmetic products can make your case worse, because frankly they are not going to serve you at all. So, what do you do?

Well, it’s time to conceal your dark circles but not with a layer of foundation. We have for you some natural remedies that are going to help you and how!

But before we get to that, we would like to share the reason behind those dark circles.

According to Dr Ajay Rana, top dermatologist and aesthetic physician, natural aging is the most common cause of dark circles. As we get old, our skin becomes thin. We lose the fat and collagen that is needed to maintain the elasticity of the skin.

Due to this, the dark blood vessels under the skin become more visible, causing the area below our eyes to darken. The skin around our eyes is very delicate and has fewer oil glands, as compared to the rest of the face. With age, the skin loses collagen, elastin and the proteins found in the skin, which triggers wrinkles.

“There are many causes for dark circles under eyes such as lack of sleep or poor sleeping habits, allergies, hyperpigmentation, reduced levels of fatty tissue around the eyes, thinning skin under the eyes, anaemia from iron deficiency in our body, overexposure to sunlight, frequent rubbing of the eyes, aging, smoking, thyroid conditions and dehydration. In some cases, genetics also play an important role as the cause for the appearance of dark circles,” explains Dr Rana.

Here are seven home remedies that you can use to reduce dark circles naturally
1. Cucumber

Cucumber has skin-energising and mild astringent properties, which are helpful in tackling dark circles. Refrigerate fresh cucumber and cut it into thick slices. Apply these slices over the eyes for 10 minutes. The cucumber juice that remains over eyelids can be gently tapped using fingertips.

2. Potato

Potato is a great remedy to cure dark circles. It contains enzymes with astringent properties that help to reduce inflammation and tighten the skin. Cut the potato into slices, prick and keep it in the refrigerator. Apply this daily over the eyelids for 10 minutes and then rinse the eyelids with water. After this, apply a good under eye cream.

3. Essential vitamins and minerals

Dark circles are caused by increased pigments, either from rubbing or from sun damage. For this use topical lightening agents such as vitamin C, kojic acid, and licorice extract. These agents help to decrease skin pigmentation, ultimately resulting in the lightening of the dark circles. Always go for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

4. Tea bags

Use caffeinated tea bags under your eyes to reduce dark circles. The caffeine in the tea contains powerful antioxidants that increases the blood flow to the skin. It also protects our skin against UV rays and slows down the aging process. Steep two tea bags for three to five minutes. Keep the tea bags in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. Then, squeeze out the extra liquid and apply this to the under-eye area, leaving the tea bags on for 15 to 30 minutes.
