If you can name one ingredient in skincare that is more versatile than aloe vera gel, I will gladly change my name. Try as you might, nothing else can compete. Aloe vera gel can hydrate the skin, fight acne, keep wrinkles at bay, nourish hair, soothe rashes, heal wounds, mend your broken heart and fix your life.

My tryst with aloe vera gel began as a teenager when my mother would pluck aloe leaves from our garden and apply the fresh gel on my oozing pimples. As a 20-something-adult I swapped expensive serums with branded aloe vera gel to layer underneath my moisturiser.

But that’s not why I am singing praises of this wonder ingredient today. When my combination skin started leaning towards dull and dry, this aloe-vera face pack came to my rescue. And that’s when I truly fell head over heels in love with this plant.

Aloe vera and lemon are a match made in heaven for dull skin
As my acne cleared up in my mid-20s, my very oily skin promptly transformed into combination skin. Exfoliants that once left my skin glowing, now made it dry. That’s when I decided to give this two-ingredient face mask, featuring pure aloe vera gel and lemon juice, a try.

Since aloe vera gel is loaded with amino acids, it nourishes the skin and boost’s collagen production. Not to mention, its high-water content ensures that your skin gets the hydration it needs. Lemon juice, on the other hand, is bursting with vitamin C which brightens the skin. It also boasts of citric acid which sloughs away dead skin cells, thus banish dull skin.

Here’s how I made this mask
I scooped out the gel from an aloe leaf and put it in a blender. To this, I added the juice of one medium-sized lemon and combined the two ingredients in the mixer. Once done, I transferred the liquid (if you’re using fresh gel then it’s going to be watery) into a container and put it in the fridge.

If you’re using a packaged variety, two tablespoons of the product should do the trick.

Here’s how I applied it
Each night after cleansing my face, I applied a thin layer of the mask on my face and let it sit for 15 minutes. Next, I washed my face gently with water and moisturised as usual.

The results?
The first morning after I applied this mask, I could see a subtle glow on my face—but nothing to write home about. That said, my skin was softer than usual and my large pores weren’t bursting with whiteheads for the first time in a long time.

The real magic happened a week later. That’s when the glow kicked. Not only was my skin soft, my pores also seemed smaller in size (I am giving 100 out of 100 to lemon juice for this) and I was legit glowing.

A word of caution though
Lemon isn’t for everyone. If your skin is dry and/or sensitive, I would suggest you give lemon juice a skip and try gentler ingredients instead. The lactic acid in yogurt and milk can give you the same effect, while nourishing the skin.

So that’s it, folks! This is how aloe and lemon together gave me flawless skin. Do let me know in the comments below how this beauty hack worked for you.
