Throw out your fancy creams, because these natural ingredients can fix your dry skin this winter

If your dry skin can’t cope with the harsh winter chill, then fret not. Rather, trust these five natural ingredients to fix that winter dryness.

All those who hate the Indian summer, wait desperately for the Indian winter–relishing the respite that cold weather brings with it. But guess what else it brings along? Why, winter dryness of course!

If you’re of those poor folks who suffer at the hand of dry patches each winter–thick moisturising formulations notwithstanding–then we feel you. But, we’ve also got your back. Because where the fanciests of serums, creams, and masques fail–these natural ingredients come to the rescue.

So, without further ado–here are five kitchen ingredients that will help your skin fight the winter chill:

1. Honey
Honey is what is known as a humectant. Humectants prevent moisture loss from the skin–which, no points for guessing happens a whole lot in the winter. So, apply honey on your can ensure that all that hydration and nourishment from your regular-Joe moisturisers is trapped in the skin and the chilly air doesn’t leech it out. Moreover, honey is also a natural exfoliator which means it sloughs away dead skin cells to give you soft and glowing skin.

To apply: Apply about a tablespoon of honey all over your cleansed face and leave it on for 10 minutes. Gently massage it all over your skin before washing it off with warm water.

2. Aloe vera gel
To be honest, aloe vera gel is an all-year-long moisturiser. So sardi ho ya garmi, this trusted ingredient won’t let your skin down. Aloe vera gel has this unique quality of improving the skin’s ability to retain moisture. This makes it a great serum, especially for the winter months, when no amount of creams seem to help.

To apply: On cleansed face, apply a thick layer of pure aloe vera gel and massage it in. Let it absorb and follow up with your regular moisturiser.

3. Ghee
A saviour for severely dry skin, if you’re looking for deep skin nourishment then ghee is your best bet. And guess what? You don’t even have to eat it to get its skin benefits. Bursting with nourishing fatty acids, ghee is an emollient i.e. it softens and smoothes the skin. Moreover, it is also very effective in relieving the itching that comes with dryness.

To apply: On cleansed face, massage a dollop of ghee for three to four minutes. Wipe it off with moist cotton wool after an hour or so.

4. Yogurt
As good as yogurt is for providing hydration, it’s starring power is fighting acne and exfoliating the skin. And we’ve got the food’s lactic acid content to thank for that. An alpha-hydroxy acid, lactic acid dissolves dead skin cells and keeps lines and wrinkles at bay too.

To apply: Use yogurt as a base for a masque–then be it with coffee grinds for extra exfoliation or with honey and turmeric for an enviable glow.

5. Banana
Yes, bananas are a miracle fruit indeed. Loaded with potassium, bananas hydrate repair and hydrate dry skin. Not to mention, it’s vitamin A content ensures that your skin is soft and smooth. So, if you can bear the smell, then let bananas be your remedy for dry and dull winter skin.

To apply: On cleansed apply, apply a mashed banana and leave it on for 15 minutes. Wash it off with warm water and moisturise like you normally would. For added nourishment, you can also add a teaspoon of honey to this masque.

So, there you go! Kick those expensive creams to the curb and rely on these basic kitchen ingredients to bid adieu to dry winter skin.
