Your skin is a perfect reflection of your internal health. Glowing skin indicates good health. Truth be told, radiant skin is a consequence of multiple factors such as eating right, exercising often, getting enough sleep and using the right products that suit your skin type. On the other hand, stress, anxiety, and poor diet will reflect on your skin, making it acne-prone and dull. When you practice yoga, it helps you lead a stress-free life and this investment in your self-care results in glowing skin.

Importance of protecting your skin

As the largest organ of the human body, the skin is responsible for many important bodily functions. It is the first layer of protection against the harmful radiation of the sun. The skin protects you from the harmful ultraviolet rays which can otherwise damage your cells. When you do not protect your skin, it causes wrinkles, sagging skin, fine lines, and dark spots. The skin also doubles up as a shield against many viruses and bacteria that you come in contact with daily. Healthy skin produces vitamin D when it comes in contact with the sun, and vitamin D is extremely important for our health.

So, the function of your skin is more than just being aesthetic and hence, it needs to be taken care of in order to maintain your health.

Yoga asanas for glowing skin

In yoga, the combination of asanas such as halasana, karnapeedasana, sarvangasana and shirshasana help add radiance to your skin. These asanas clear the pores, release tension and clean sensory organs like the eyes and nose. Healthy and glowing skin is reflective of our health–both physical and mental.

Here are three yoga asanas that will ensure your skin doesn’t just glow but is healthy from the inside too:

  1. Halasana
  • Lie down on your back and place your palms on the floor beside you
  • Use your abdominal muscles to lift your legs up at an angle of 90 degrees
  • Press your palms firmly on the floor and take your legs back till they’re placed behind your head
  • Support your lower back with the palms, as required
  • Hold the asana for a while

Word of advice: Those who have lumbago, neck pain, spondylitis and high blood pressure should not practice this posture.

  1. Sarvangasana
  • Lie down on your back and place your arms by your side
  • Gently lift your legs off the floor and position them perpendicular to the floor with your feet facing the sky
  • Slowly lift your pelvis and back off the floor
  • Place your palms on your back for support
  • Try to align your shoulder, torso, pelvis, legs and feet.
  • Focus your gaze towards your feet.

Word of Advice: Practitioners with wrist, neck or shoulder issues should refrain from performing this asana. Women must refrain from performing this asana during menstruation or pregnancy. Also practitioners who are suffering from enlarged thyroid, liver or spleen, cervical spondylitis, slipped disc and high blood pressure or other heart ailments must refrain from performing this asana.

  1. Super-power meditation

It is a highly recommended practice because it influences the rate at which your body can heal itself. Meditation techniques can improve your mood, calm your mind and help relax you.

  • To practice this, seat yourself in Sukhasana or any other comfortable pose that gives you the shape of a pyramid.
  • If possible, practice it on a mountain. The intention is to sit in the shape of the mountain atop a mountain.
  • In this position, you need to visualize a reverse triangular shield in your chest and then meditate.
  • During the meditative process, imagine that with every inhalation, this shield allows you to welcome all the positive energy of the world into yourself. As you exhale, you release unwanted toxins, miseries, and negativity from within you.

Having great skin can boost your confidence and self-esteem. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, avoiding unhealthy foods that are fatty, processed or too oily. Do make sure you’re practising yoga regularly because it can take away years from your face, making you look at least 10 years younger. Asanas and breathing techniques can revitalize your health, and bring back the shine on your skin. Women and men alike should invest in regular clean-up or facial procedures. Therapeutic massages with the right kind of products and oils stimulate the skin to keep it looking nourished and moisturised.
