Just a few years ago, reality TV star Kim Kardashian tried out the vampire facial, which became the buzzword among young women. But imagine a doctor drawing blood from you, spinning it in a device to extract the platelet-rich plasma, and then injecting it in your body! There was also the lollipop lipstick trend, which looked like you just took a sip from a coffee cup or ate oily food, and ended up with remnants of lipstick all around your mouth and down to your chin. Year after year, we have seen weird beauty trends. So, before we welcome New Year 2023, let’s take a look at the bizarre beauty trends of 2022.

If you are active on social media, you must have seen Cold Girl Make-up trending. It is all about getting flushed cheeks, glossy lips and a glow on your face. It is just like recreating the flush that you get from being outside in the cold. It is a bizarre beauty trend, as who needs to put in so much effort to achieve a flushed look when you can just step out and get it naturally?

Another bizarre beauty trend of 2022 was the brow lamination, which involves brushing your brows up till you get a desired shape. Then you have to set them semi-permanently (for more than a month) so that you can skip styling your brows every morning.

Bizarre beauty trends of 2022

To know how some of the bizarre beauty trends of 2022 affected the skin, Health Shots reached out to Dr Shareefa Chause, Dermatologist, Apollo Spectra Mumbai.

1. Period face mask

If you think vampire facial is weird, think again. The two beauty trends are totally different, but both require you to use your own blood. In the new trend, young women used period blood as face masks as they believed that it nourishes skin and clears acne. But Dr Chause said that it is not true, and there is no scientific evidence to back the so-called skincare benefits of period face mask. She noted that it can cause skin infections as period blood contains secretion from vagina and cervix. Some women have infection in the vagina and cervix, and because of that, bacteria and fungus from period blood can lead to redness, skin irritation and sometimes even aggravate acne.

2. Calamine lotion as a primer

Many women grew up using Calamine lotion, especially when they felt a little itchy. The expert said that you should use it to treat allergies like an insect bite or burn due to urticaria, but applying Calamine lotion as a primer will lead to skin dryness and tightness. It also leaves a pinkish white cast on your face which means that it can’t be used under a foundation shade.

3. Bleached or shaved eyebrows

Have you ever wondered how you will look without your eyebrows? This is another bizarre beauty trend that went viral online. Eyebrows give a shape to your face, so shaving them won’t give you the ideal look.

4. Contouring with sunscreen

Sunscreen is the most important component of skincare, but some women decided to experiment with it in the last few months. They covered some parts of their face with sunscreen while letting the sun’s rays naturally shaping their other parts. The expert said that skipping sunscreen can lead to skin damage, which will be permanent. She also shared that sun’s rays contributes to skin ageing.
