If you’re here to know how to treat dark spots, you must first know what causes them in the first place. Melanin, the pigment that gives the skin its colour, is produced in the deeper layers of the epidermis. While melanin plays a crucial role in protecting the skin from the sun’s radiation, its increased levels may cause dark spots and pigmentation.

Sometimes, the melanin-rich cells may come up to the skin surface due to hormonal or other internal reasons. These reasons and not applying a sunscreen regularly often results in uneven deposits of melanin. This leads to pigmented skin, dark spots and patches of uneven skin tone.

Dr Nivedita Dadu, a renowned dermatologist, spoke to HealthShots about facial oils that can fade and treat pigmented patches of skin.

Here are few facial oils that can be very beneficial to treat dark spots and pigmented skin:

1. Rosehip oil

Be it dull skin, discolouration of lips or acne scars, rosehip oil can be very helpful. Pure rosehip seed oil will help in speeding up the regeneration of the skin cells resulting in a bright complexion. This oil will deeply hydrate the skin with its fatty acids that can also reduce redness on the skin.

2. Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil’s ‘fading’ superpowers come more from its ability to prevent and rapidly heal a blemish or wound, rather than a scar fading itself. It banishes bacteria associated with a blemish or skin tear, leading to faster healing.
“Swiping on tea tree oil with a cotton pad after cleansing and before heavy serums or moisturisers to help eliminate dark spots, pigmentation and remove bacteria that cause breakouts. It is an effective treatment for reducing post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation due to acne lesions, preventing the development of dark spots and acne scars”, says Dr Dadu, who is also the founder and chairman of Dr. Nivedita Dadu’s Dermatology Clinic.

3. Frankincense oil

This oil consists of healing properties that will help reduce the appearance of scars, eczema, hyper-pigmentation and dark spots from the skin. The astringent properties of frankincense oil will help in treating acne, reducing large pores, and tightening of the skin. It helps to replenish and bring back the glow of the skin. It has powerful antiseptic and healing properties. This oil is used to brighten dull and dark skin from sun damage.

4. Sandalwood oil

Sandalwood essential oil contains tyrosinase that makes it effective at lightening hyperpigmentation. Its anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory qualities make sandalwood perfect for lightening dark patches on skin.

5. Geranium oil

It contains anti-inflammatory properties that help to reduce dark spots and skin discoloration, especially acne scars. “Geranium oil is very effective in lightening scars, blemishes, and dark spots”, suggests Dr Dadu. It helps to heal damaged skin as a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Geranium wields a natural astringent action, which calms redness, and is also deeply soothing and toning in nature. It also helps with better hydration retention in the skin, which always leads to an improved natural appearance of any scarring or hyper-pigmentation.
