There is one thing that every woman in this big bad world wants: glowing skin. In fact, such is our commitment to this goal that we are willing to spend our bank balance on ridiculously expensive products that make us feel that dewy skin is within our reach.

But did you know that the flawless skin we oh-so-crave isn’t all that difficult to get? In fact, just getting your basics right can help you go a long way in getting the skin of your dreams.

Here, Dr Geetanjali Shetty–consultant dermatologist and cosmetologist on behalf of Cetaphil India–reveals the four skincare basics that we often get wrong:

1. You eat far too much junk food
Your skin talks a lot about what you eat. If you eat unhealthy, processed, and junk food and do not drink enough water or drink colas–your skin gets pigmented or becomes dry and dehydrated. So, even the best skincare products won’t help if you are not getting the right nutrition.

2. You don’t check product ingredients
You might have been using that one brand of moisturizer since forever, but is it really doing anything for your skin? Does it have ingredients that are suited for your oily/dry/combination skin? After all, the formulation of the product makes all the difference. So, it is imperative that you check with your dermatologist about the right ingredients that suit your skin type.

3. You don’t stick to your cleansing routine
Cleansing should be a crucial, non-negotiable step in any skincare routine. Make a vow to keep your cleansing routine consistent—you should cleanse every morning before applying your makeup for the day, and also every evening before heading to bed.

4. You skimp on moisturisation
Your skin needs daily moisturization. And when you moisturise also counts. Moisturising immediately after a bath ensures better penetration of the product as compared to when your skin is completely dry, long after the shower. Skipping this essential step will ensure that your skin is dry and dull. So please–don’t!
