What is sugaring?

Sugaring is actually an ancient method of hair removal where sugar is used in its melted form. It is quite similar to waxing as we know it but more convenient and cost-effective given that we can do it right from the comfort of our home and don’t need wax strips for it. The star ingredient which is sugar has always been known for its great exfoliation properties. In fact, a study published by PubMed titled Sugaring: an ancient method of hair removal concluded that “Hairless and exfoliated skin is achieved.”

Here’s how to prepare sugar wax:

Step 1: Add sugar, lemon juice and water to a pot. Stir it slightly to mix the ingredients.

Step 2: Now, place it over a stove. The flame should be set at high.

Step 3: Bring this mixture to a boil while stirring. If you don’t stir constantly, the mixture might burn.

Step 4: When you start seeing bubbles, bring the flame down to medium. Keep heating the mixture while stirring.

Step 5: Eventually, you will see the mix turning golden brown. The colour will be similar to the sort of wax you get in the market. The consistency should be slightly thick. At this point, you can take the mixture off the heat.

Here’s how to use sugar wax right at home:

1. Once you’ve prepared sugar wax, keep it aside for 30 minutes. Do not apply it to your skin immediately after taking it off heat because it can cause severe burns.

2. After about 30 minutes, take a wooden stick and use it to apply the wax on your skin in the direction of hair growth. You can use ice cream sticks for this!

3. Next, hold the skin taught and pull in the opposite direction of hair growth.
