4 skincare ingredients you must be wary of if you’re pregnant

The world of skincare has evolved over the years and there are so many products we can experiment with! While that’s great news, it is also important to understand that some ingredients may not work well when you are expecting a baby. Yes, it is essential to exercise more caution about skincare during pregnancy.

In her recent Instagram post, celebrity dermatologist Dr Jaishree Sharad has revealed the most common ingredients that should be stopped a month before planning pregnancy.

You should avoid these ingredients for skincare during pregnancy:

1. Retinoids:

Both topical (creams, serums), as well as oral (isotretinoin) retinoids, must be avoided. They can cause a risk to the fetus and must be completely avoided at all costs. Yes, retinoids they may cause birth defects in babies, so be very careful.

2. Hydroquinone:

This is an ingredient found in skin lightening creams. While there are not enough studies to prove its risk, it is still better to avoid it at all costs. It may lead to an increased risk of malformations or other similar issues, as a consequence of its exposure.

3. Arbutin:

Alpha arbutin is also an ingredient that is found in skin lightening agents. It is a derivative of hydroquinone, which we already know is not safe during pregnancy. Even if you want to use brighteners, kojic, or glycolic acid are considered safer for pregnant people.

4. Salicylic acid:

High concentrations of salicylic acid are not safe although lower concentrations found in face washes and some serums are safe. Doctors recommend using products containing salicylic acid no stronger than 2 percent. Salicylic acid is a type of beta-hydroxy acid (BHA).

Ingredients that are very safe to use:

* Vitamin C: It can be used, especially if you have dark spots. Use it instead of hydroquinone.
* Hyaluronic acid: It is an excellent hydrating agent, and is naturally found in our bodies. It works for all skin types.
* Lactic acid: It can be used for acne, but 5% or lower is better when you are expecting a baby.
* Azelaic acid: Another ingredient that can be used for acne. In animal studies, researchers haven’t seen birth defects

Bakuchiol can be used as a replacement for retinol, says Dr Jaishree. Moreover, sunscreens containing physical blocks such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are safe.
