West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is known for her fiery speeches and for not mincing her words. The lady in white is in the news again for her rather amusing jibe about a party worker’s health and his rather big ‘Madhya Pradesh’ (body’s midsection). Blowing the lid off the side effects of belly fat, Mamata Banerjee quizzed a party worker about his protruding belly and the health concerns that come with it.

Here’s what went down:

The incident happened on Monday when the Trinamool Congress leader was chairing an administrative meeting in Purulia. Suresh Agarwal, a party chairman from Jhalda, unaware of the series of advice that followed, stood up to make a statement. Interrupting him, Mamata Banerjee said, “The way your belly is growing, you could collapse any day. Are you unwell?”

This statement brought his paunch in the spotlight. The party worker seemed unperturbed by it and claimed that he’s fit and has no health concerns like blood pressure or sugar.

This led to a series of burning questions from Mamata Banerjee and left the party worker going ham to convince her that he works out often. He blamed his love for pakoras for breakfast for his glorious belly.

Mamata Banerjee quizzed him on the kind of workout he does. To which Agarwal says, “ I do Anulom Vilom and Kapal Bhati.” She was then quick to advise him that he may not lose belly fat just by doing Pranayama.

The amusing exchange continued as other meeting members were seen grinning and squirming due to second-hand embarrassment.

The cross-examination reached an open challenge from Mamata Banerjee. If you show me 1,000 Kapal Bhatis, I will give you Rs 10,000 on the spot… Impossible. You don’t know how to inhale or exhale,” she said.

This banter between the two has left the social media divided. While some disapprove of Mamata Banerjee’s statements as a ‘way of body shaming’, others appreciated the party leader for throwing light on the poor health condition of Indian leaders and councilmen.

But, the side effects of belly fat are a real deal!

Body shaming or not, Mamata Banerjee’s statements do have some weight. Belly fat is a gateway to many other health complications like cardiovascular and liver disease.

To attest the side effects of belly fat, here’s what a Harvard study suggests:

  1. Many people see an increase in belly fat as they hit their middle age. Known as visceral fat, it starts accumulating on the tummy region. Caused by metabolic disturbances, visceral fat can put you at high risk of getting cardiovascular (CDV) diseases.
  2. According to Harvard research, side effects of belly fat in women also means more chances of breast cancer.
  3. A protruding belly is also responsible for hypertension, diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, heart failure, and cancer.
  4. Visceral fat can get stored in the veins, and travel right up to your liver. Because of the clogged veins, your liver is unable to secrete the digestive juices required by our body. This further causes a hike in bad cholesterol, and insulin resistance.

Putting this in light, one should make efforts to control abdominal obesity and steer clear of the side effects of belly fat. The best way to achieve this is to modify your workout routine and diet. Choose a health regime that aims at strengthening and toning your core and abs.
