What is Ayurveda?

Developed more than 3,000 years ago in India, it is one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems. The two words — ‘Ayur’ and ‘Veda’ — have been derived from Sanskrit, which means ‘life’ and ‘knowledge’. Together, they make ‘Ayurveda’, which essentially means knowledge of life. It is a precise combination of the art of healthy living and science.

Ayurveda is well-known for its substantial nature of healing that works on diseases and boosts the overall well-being of an individual’s body as well as mind. It doesn’t just mean chanting while meditating, yoga, applying packs, or indulging in massage with essential oils, but it is deep-rooted into the mental and physiological facets of eliminating the root cause of health problems.

Ayurveda is based on the belief that the health and well-being of a person are dependent on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. The primary objective of it is not to fight diseases, but to promote good health. However, treatments may be taken for explicit medical issues.

How do Ayurvedic remedies work?

Every other human being on this planet is characterized by the mind-body type. In Ayurveda, these essential characteristics that govern the body are classified as ‘doshas’. The five elements of nature – water, earth, fire, space, and air – compensate for a mix in the three essential doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Our state of being is considered healthy only when these doshas are impeccably balanced.

If they fall out of balance due to any reason, be it anxiety, stress, depression, low energy, or unreasonable exertion, the individual is moved into a condition of ‘Vikruti’, which is an imbalanced state of body and brain. Ayurveda brings wellness by keeping the doshas in balance.

Here are a few suggested Ayurvedic remedies that are famously used to treat and improve some common health problems.

1. Ayurvedic remedy for arthritis and joint pain: Turmeric with high Curcumin, a chemical compound

Since the days of yore, turmeric has been one of the most trusted spices in the country. For centuries, people have been using its medicinal properties. According to Ayurveda, it also helps in balancing the three important doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The principal active component in turmeric (haldi) is known as curcumin. This is exactly what gives the spice its colour as well as its benefits. Curcumin is loaded with anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it a potential ingredient for several medical conditions such as reduced joint pain and increased ease of movement in people with osteoarthritis. It is among the popular Ayurvedic remedies for common colds and sore throats as well. That said, the quantity is often recommended depending on the health condition being addressed.

4. Ayurvedic remedy for pregnancy: Saffron and Ajwa dates

It’s because it has numerous benefits, right from tackling mood swings, improving sleep cycle, relieving cramps to boosting heart function, and preventing allergies. Consuming a small quantity of it is safe and very beneficial for overall health especially for pregnant women.

Ajwa dates, also known as holy dates, help in maintaining the heart’s rhythm because of the presence of magnesium. Doctors recommend that pregnant women should eat dates daily, beginning at 36 weeks of pregnancy. Dates contain B vitamin folate, which is a critical nutrient during pregnancy as it prevents serious birth defects of the baby’s brain and spine.
