With the leaves growing back and winds blowing, the winter season is about to bid us goodbye. Summer is trying to set in and we can already feel the heat. This transition of seasons also makes it necessary to switch from our winter diet.

To back this belief, a recent study by Harvard researchers found that making subtle changes to your seasonal diet significantly reduces your risk of premature death.

Therefore, make some tweaks to your winter diet and find new additions to it. To elaborate further on the same, HealthShots spoke to Celebrity Nutritionist, Shikha Aggarwal Sharma.

“As we are nearing the end of cold weather, consuming hot things can be harmful for your health. Continuing with your winter diet may cause more harm than benefit.”

Here are 5 things you eat in your winter diet but need to discontinue in summer:

1. Tea and coffee

A majority of people enjoy tea and coffee. However in the summer season, tea and coffee consumption should be minimized or avoided. Tea and coffee generate a lot of heat in our bodies throughout the summer. In the summer, drinking tea or coffee may lead to stomach gas and other health problems. In this case, it is preferable to avoid tea and coffee in favor of other cold beverages.

2. Oily food

Fried-roasted foods should be avoided at all times, but especially during the summer. During the summer, eating oily foods might create digestive issues and cause indigestion and heartburn.

3. Garam masala

As warm weather hits us, hot spices and spice laden food should be avoided. Particularly, hold the spoon when adding chilli to your food. Spices such as black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and bay leaves are warm in nature, so using them mindlessly in the summer causes the metabolic rate to rise and suffer from hot flashes.

4. Ginger

Along with having antioxidants, ginger has a variety of other qualities. While eating it is beneficial to one’s health, it can be hazardous in the summer season. It has natural warmth-inducing effects that raises the body heat when consumed. Summer is a good time to cut back on your ginger consumption.

5. Garlic

Garlic has a warming impact and raises the metabolic rate in addition to having antioxidant characteristics. As a result, excessive consumption of it is not advised. During the winter, it is typical to consume 2 or 3 buds every day. During the summer, you can cut back on the amount according to your needs.

6. Flaxseed

Flaxseed is packed with nutritional content. However, one should limit consuming them as the summer approaches. You should also avoid eating flaxseed if you have a pitta imbalance. Because flaxseed consumption during the summer can result in a variety of issues such as increased blood pressure, a sensation of heat, and so on. As a result, flaxseeds should be eaten in moderation during the hot season.
