I’ve always seen my mother using copper jugs and bottles over glass and plastic—and I have always wondered why. So one fine day when she scolded me for using a plastic bottle, it irked me so much that I decided to ask an expert as to what is so great about using copper utensils for drinking water.

So I got in touch with M. Saroja Nandam, a senior dietician at Apollo TeleHealth, and she told me that copper-infused water provides our body with the micronutrients it needs. “Our diet lacks these micronutrients that copper can provide, so drinking water through copper vessels or even cooking food in copper-lined vessels is a good idea,” says Nandam.

That’s not all! There are other benefits of copper water. Let’s take a look, shall we?

1. It keeps your body cool
“Most food that we eat becomes acidic in our stomach and also creates toxins. Copper-infused water is alkaline in nature and it helps in balancing the acidic nature and detoxifies keeping your body cool,” explains Nandam.

2. Prevents anaemia
Copper is important for our body. From cell formation to aiding in the absorption of iron, it is an essential mineral for the overall functioning of the body. Drinking copper water can help the body in absorbing iron which can prevent anaemia.

3. Has anti-cancer properties
Copper is rich in strong antioxidants that help fight off free radicals and nullify its effects, which is one of the main reasons behind the development of cancer cells.

4. It also has healing properties
Copper has immense antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties which makes it a great healing agent. It not only heals the body externally but also internally by boosting immunity and aiding the production of new healthy cells.

5. Fights off infections
E.coli and S.aureus are the two most common bacteria in the environment and they can cause severe physical ailments in humans. Copper has the power to effectively eliminate these bacteria and prevent any further infections.

6. Helps maintain heart health
According to the American Cancer Society, copper water has been found to help minimize your risk of developing heart disease by regulating blood pressure, heart rate. Copper also lowers one’s bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

7. Prevents fine lines and wrinkles
In ancient times, people used copper-based beautifying agents and skincare products. Why? Well, because copper is rich in antioxidants and it promotes cell formation. It also fights off free radicals that can give you fine lines and wrinkles.

8. Relieves throat congestion
“Back in the day, water stored in copper vessels was used for gargling every morning to treat throat infections,” explains Nandam.

Too much copper water is also not good for you
“Make sure you’re not overusing copper water, as excess copper can give you diarrhoea and damage your organs in the long run,” warns Nandam.

So drinking copper-infused water twice or thrice a day and ensure that you’re not storing drinking water in copper bottles or other utensils for more than six hours at a stretch.
