We’ve all sprinkled some black salt or kala namak on our favourite fruits, or added a pinch of it to a bowl of dahi. After all, it enhances the taste of anything and everything—and we just can’t do without this kitchen staple. But did you know, your favourite kala namak also offers a host of health benefits? Yes, it’s true!

This pinkish-grey salt has generous amounts of iron and minerals, and most people use it to control their blood pressure levels, considering it is low on sodium. That’s exactly why it is a popular alternative to common or table salt that has large quantities of sodium, and is a trigger for several health issues.

Apart from this, there are many other benefits of black salt too, and we’ve got Dr Lovneet Batra, a top clinical nutritionist working with Fortis La Femme Delhi, to tell us more about them!

1. Helps with weight loss
Since black salt contains low levels of sodium, it doesn’t cause any kind of water retention or bloating. And that means if you consume a low-sodium diet, you could very well shed those pounds, and ace your weight loss game!

2. Boosts digestion
“Digestive issues, such as bloating or constipation, are common. Black salt or kala namak has alkaline properties that reduces the secretion of excess acid in the stomach. Moreover, the minerals present in black salt can also help minimise the damage caused by acid reflux. All in all, it’s great to boost digestion,” informs Dr Lovneet.

3. Reduces fatigue
Not many know but black salt is beneficial for your skin, and reduces fatigue! “Add a pinch of black salt to lukewarm bath water, and just soak yourself in it and relax. It will help in treating cracked skin and rejuvenates you in no time. It will drive away your fatigue, and you’ll feel refreshed,” adds Dr Lovneet.

“Black salt is highly recommended for those suffering from respiratory issues and sinusitis. Add black salt while steaming to open up clogged nostrils, and clearing your phlegm. You can also gargle with warm water that has black salt to soothe your throat,” she advises.

5. Prevents muscle spasms and cramps
If you suffer from muscle cramps and spasms on the regular, then it’s time to use black salt or kala namak. This salt is rich in potassium, which is important for proper muscle function.
