Diabetes has become the bane of our times. Call it a consequence of our poor lifestyles, increased dependence on processed foods, and terrible sleeping habits. Sometimes, genetics play a part too. But whatever may be the reason, if you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, it means that your body is unable to produce sufficient insulin, or there is insulin resistance. And if your insulin goes out of whack, your sugar levels can reach dangerously high levels.

The world of health and fitness can spring up surprises, particularly with natural remedies. You may have heard of several foods that can help, but sometimes the hype just dies down. This time around, we have a solution for you that may help help: it is a yellow concoction called mulberry tea. It is a tea that is extracted from the mulberry tree that is a part of the Moraceae family.

In fact, a study published in the Saudi Journal of Biological Sciences revealed that drinking mulberry tea can be helpful to bring down sugar spikes brought on by eating.

What is the secret ingredient in mulberry tea?

Celebrity nutritionist and author Kavita Devgan says that this tea works since it has a compound called DNJ (1-deoxynojirimycin) that helps lower blood sugar levels. The mulberry tea leaves suppress the elevation of postprandial blood glucose (PPG).

As per the study ‘Reduction of postprandial hyperglycemia by mulberry tea in type-2 diabetes patients’, researchers tried to establish the link between consumption of mulberry tea and reduction in levels of postprandial blood glucose in diabetics. Around 20 participants were given regular tea, while 28 of them drank mulberry tea.

The PPG levels were recorded after the consumption of 70 ml tea along with one teaspoon of sugar after 90 minutes in all 48 patients. After the consumption of plain tea and mulberry tea, there was a significant change in PPG levels in those participants who had mulberry tea. The researchers concluded that mulberry tea suppresses PPG levels after 90 minutes of its consumption.

Here are some other ways to control diabetes:

1. Oats:

This breakfast favourite is helpful when it comes to reducing blood sugar levels. It is a great source of fibre and makes sure the absorption of sugar into your bloodstream happens gradually. But make sure you have rolled or steel cut oats, and not those packed with flavour, as those will not help you in any way.

2. Boiled eggs:

Well, eggs are protein-packed! This snack (or breakfast item) can be prepared with ease, and doesn’t even require any oil. You can get your dose of nutrition, without messing with your blood sugar levels. You could add onions, tomatoes, and a little salt and pepper to add some flavour.

3. Nuts and seeds mix:

We know snack cravings can drive anyone crazy, but for diabetics, the evening hours are particularly risk. Indulging in those fried chips and biscuits is a big no-no, so create a mix of your favourite nuts and seeds, and chomp away. It also has a generous dose of healthy fat. The best part your blood sugar levels will stay in control!
