According to experts, there’s a whole range of fruits that are available specifically for those who are dealing with diabetes, and kiwi tops the charts.

Without a doubt our body needs fibre, and other important nutrients and only fruits can help there. No wonder, kiwi is recommended by health experts for being nutrient-rich, plus it keeps insulin levels in check!

According to Dr Vinoda Kumary, deputy chief medical officer at Jindal Naturecure Institute, Bangalore, kiwi is a fruit with a glycemic index of 50 and a glycemic load of 6. It is an ideal breakfast food for diabetics

“It is rich in vitamin C, polyphenols and other compounds with antioxidant properties. Basically, they neutralize free radicals, lower blood sugar, and help improve the body’s innate immunity”, she explained.

She added, “Kiwi is also an excellent source of soluble fibre, and reduces the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream. The skin is rich in insoluble fiber, and promotes the movement of material through the digestive tract. Kiwi consumption is associated with lower plasma concentrations of triglycerides and fibrinogen, making it a heart-friendly diabetic food.”

Apart from controlling the blood sugar levels, kiwi is a great source of vitamin E, which is another way of replenishing antioxidants for diabetics. Also, according to Dr Kumary, people who deal with severe diabetes have a tendency to develop depression and anxiety due to their situation. Plus, insomnia is also common. For them, kiwi is a great option.
