The year 2020 has been quite a lot to handle. As we are all looking for ways to boost our immunity on guard with our immunity, trying to protect ourselves from covid-19, the weather department is predicting a pretty heavy monsoon. And in case you’ve forgotten, the rainy season is a hot-bed of water-borne infections–that need for us to have a strong immune system.

During monsoon, seasonal maladies such as the flu, allergies, and other infections start taking a toll on us. Of course, they are treatable but it is always better to prepare your body for any threats, so that you don’t have to depend on antibiotics and other medicines.

But how can you really prepare your body? By eating the right diet of course. And if you don’t know where to start, then these five foods-recommended by Dolly Kumar, founder, and director of Gaia-will help you out:

1. Green tea
Not just weight loss but green tea is also known to boost immunity as it is rich in antioxidants. But ensure that you opt for caffeine-free green teas. Kumar suggests switching to an aromatic cup of green tea, instead of having your regular milky-sweet concoction.

The minerals and nutrients in green tea also help the body to detoxify impurities accumulated over time. It also improves the body’s digestive system and also helps in cleansing the skin.

2. Honey
An Ayurvedic solution, honey does wonders for the body if you have a sore throat and/or cold. It is nature’s answer to most health ailments. Multifloral honey, when consumed with some ginger, is the perfect cure for sore throats. A natural substitute for sugar, honey is also a great immunity booster as it is free from fat, cholesterol, and sodium.

3. Neem
You just can’t go wrong with Neem. It is the king of all medicinal plants and has been used since ancient times to cure all kinds of diseases and disorders. An upset stomach is one of the common problems during monsoon and neem is the perfect remedy for your gut.

Neem also has cooling properties. Its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and blood-cleansing properties aid in building the body’s resistance against external infections and malicious agents. Neem also helps in strengthening the body’s immunity and digestion.

4. Aloe vera
The humidity in the air can lead to multiple skin problems during this season and that’s where aloe vera can help you out. Aloe vera is a powerhouse of nutrients as it contains more than twenty amino acids and essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and sodium along with enzymes, vitamins, polysaccharides, nitrogen, and other vital nutrients.

5. Olive oil
You don’t have to avoid oil at any time of the year, period! Our body needs good fats and olive oil is one of the lightest and healthiest options that are available. So, whenever you make a salad for yourself then sprinkle some olive oil on top and you’ll be good to go.

Now let’s talk about its health benefits. Olive oil has phenolic compounds that are a powerhouse of antioxidants which helps in boosting immunity. Plus, it also has strong anti-inflammatory properties which are good for our overall well-being.

Apart from food, Kumar also suggests that including some sort of physical activities is much required. You should exercise, do yoga, and can also try meditation.

So, keep the reins of immunity in your hands and stay healthy this monsoon.
