Flaxseeds, also known as common flax or linseeds, are small oil seeds that originated in the Middle East thousands of years ago. Lately, they have gained popularity as a superfood, and rightly so as these seeds have high content of heart-healthy omega-3 fats, fibre, and other unique plant compounds. Here are some of the benefits of flaxseeds:

1. Improves heart health:

Flaxseeds are high in the omega-3 fatty acid ALA. Plant-based ALA fatty acids have been related to improved heart health and a decreased risk of stroke.

Flaxseeds contain lignans, a kind of vitamin with strong antioxidant and estrogenic characteristics.

3. High on fibre

Flaxseeds contain 29 percent carbohydrates, 95 percent of which are fibre. One tablespoon of whole flaxseeds has ample fibre, and because flaxseeds contain so much fibre, including them in your diet encourages regular bowel movements and can enhance your digestive health.

4. Plant-based protein

Flaxseeds are a strong source of plant-based protein and may be used as an alternate protein source for vegetarians and vegans.

Flaxseeds keep you fuller for longer and may help you lose weight by suppressing your appetite.
