The heatwave and temperature in northern India made the maximum temperatures in some locations surpass the 49 degrees Celsius barrier in May. So, it is more vital than ever to stick to a proper skincare and beauty routine to protect your skin. If you’re wondering how to protect your skin from the blazing sun, read on!

Health Shots got in touch with Shahnaz Husain, the beauty mogul and skincare expert, founder, and chairperson of The Shahnaz Husain Group, who shared skincare ideas that can help you sail through the hot summer months and deal with the terrible heat wave.

Here are 5 ways you can protect your skin from summer sun and heat:

1. Consume Antioxidant-rich foods

Husain suggests a good diet is the first line of defense to protect your skin from heat waves. Antioxidant-rich vegetables and fruits are recommended because they function as oral sunscreens. Such foods can help you reverse the effects of damaging solar rays and function as a protective mechanism against oxidative stress produced by scorching summer.

2. Wear sunscreen

The first piece of summer skincare advice is to wear sunscreen properly because UV rays can severely harm your skin. You should use sunscreen, sun creams, or sprays before leaving the house. Even while wearing fully-covered clothing, make sure you apply sunscreen or sunblock.

3. Staying hydrated is a must

The simplistic way to remain hydrated is to drink enough water on a regular basis. It not only cools but also cleanses your system and is great for your skin and hair, giving you a sparkling lustre all year. “Rosewater may also be used to moisturise the skin on your face. It is moisturising and helps to keep your skin looking healthy and youthful,” says Husain.

4. Use waterproof and lightweight makeup

Keep a light hand when putting on makeup during summer. Lightweight makeup formulas are superior to heavier creams and cosmetic products since they allow your skin to breathe in hot temperatures. Apply powder-based liquid foundation or even a BB cream for a bright, fresh look. Use waterproof mascaras, lip and cheek tints, and blushes that allow your skin to relax.

5. Cleanse, tone, and moisturise on a regular basis

A CTM routine should be your go-to skincare even in summer. Our pores tend to open in the summer due to more secretion of sebum, the skin’s natural oil. Blackheads and breakouts are caused by excessive oil, sweat and dirt clogging the pores.

Husain says, “The wash, tone, and moisturise beauty routine is not only the most basic but also the most effective method of skincare. Apply a light cleanser, toner, and moisturiser according to your skin type daily, followed by a moderate exfoliator once or twice a week, to get rid of dead cells developing on the surface of your skin.”

6. Don’t neglect your body care in summer

Like your facial skin, the skin on your body needs some TLC too. You may remove grime, sweat and oil deposits from your body with a decent scrub, which you can prepare at home. One of the most effective scrubs is sea salt. In a mixing dish, combine two teaspoons of sea salt, one tablespoon of fresh lemon juice, and a few drops of olive oil. Combine the ingredients and rub them into your neck and arms in a circular motion with a soft palm. Rinse it thoroughly with warm water after 20 minutes. While sea salt will remove any residue, lemon will help to brighten the skin’s appearance.
