We still live in a society where sex education is often unheard of, and not openly discussed, even with friends and family. And when it comes to ‘the vagina’, it is spoken about in even more hushed tones. The vagina has always been looked at as a sacred place, and something that is ‘inappropriate’ to discuss.

This lack of awareness has led to a rise in misinformation and myths around the vagina. While some of them are harmless, some myths force you to believe that your lady bits need to look and feel a certain way. This can really rob your peace of mind, and can affect you psychologically. So, it is important not to get trapped in these myths, and have more conversations.

Without further ado, let’s debunk the myths!

Myth #1: Your vagina gets loose if you indulge in a lot of sex

Equal numbers of men and women still believe that having sex can loosen the vagina, which is completely false! This is not merely just an assumption, but has often been used to shame people for their sexual preferences. But the fun fact is, it is a myth! Yes, your vagina cannot get loose, no matter how much sex you have.

Vagina has elasticity, that gets relaxed when you’re aroused, and then again gets back to its normal shape and size. However, the vagina can get a bit lax with age, and post a normal delivery, but it is definitely not because of the number of times you’ve had sex.

Myth #2: Itchiness=infection

Itching down there does not always mean that you have a yeast infection. Vaginal itching can be because of several other reasons, such as pubic lice, STDs, bacterial vaginosis, or simply just because of irritation caused by a product you’re using.

So, it is better to see your doctor to ascertain the cause, before taking any over the counter medications.

Myth #3: You can only orgasm through intercourse

Absolutely wrong! An orgasm is not just related to the intercourse, it is achieved through the stimulation of your clitoris. Whether it is getting stimulated with a vibrator or oral sex, you can reach the big O easily.

Myth #4: If you catch a STD, your vagina will show the symptoms

While some diseases like gonorrhoea, herpes, or syphilis will show symptoms in some women, some women can be totally unaware of it. Untreated STDs can lead to serious complications such as infertility or damage to your reproductive system. So, it’s really important to get tested for STDs regularly, especially if you have multiple partners.

Myth #5: Your vagina needs special products for cleaning

While your vagina is a self-cleansing organ, you still need to clean your vulva for hygiene purposes, and not because it is a gross place. But don’t spend big bucks on fancy intimate washes or any special product, because your good old mild soap and warm water is enough

In fact, the more fancy products you use, the higher the chances of altering the pH balance of your vagina!

Ladies, now that we’ve busted these myths, it’s time to follow the right practices and not fall into the trap!
