Our vagina has to bear a lot. From being exposed to a filthy toilet pot to the semen – everything and anything is capable of messing around with your lady parts. And if you really don’t care, we would like to say that having vaginal problems can be painful. What’s more, it can give rise to some serious reproductive problems as well.

So ladies, pay attention to what we are about to reveal, because these problems are NOT normal.

Here are seven common vaginal problems you must know about
1. Yeast infections

It can happen due to the overgrowth of the candida fungus, which tends to live inside the body (like the mouth, throat, gut, and vagina) and on the skin. Did you know? Some factors such as antibiotics, pregnancy, uncontrolled diabetes, or a weakened immune system can destroy the balance of bacteria in the vagina, causing the yeast to multiply, and thrive as the vagina is wet.

Thus, many women experience symptoms such as itchiness, foul smell, pain, soreness, and discomfort, while urinating. It’s abnormal as it can lead to redness, swelling, and cracks in the wall of the vagina.

2. Trichomoniasis

This happens due to parasitic action and spreads via unprotected sex. It’s the most common curable STI and can be spread, even when you have no signs. Itching, pelvic pain, painful intercourse, and redness of the genitals are some of its symptoms.

3. Bacterial vaginosis

Along with yeast, even “friendly” bacteria called lactobacilli live in the vagina. When the number of lactobacilli gets too low, it can lead to a worrisome condition known as bacterial vaginosis. Did you know? Gardnerella bacteria is linked to associated with bacterial vaginosis.

This condition is associated with a white discharge. A fishy odour may be noticeable, especially during intercourse which is not at all normal. One might avoid getting intimate, owing to the fear of foul smell. It can also increase the risk of contracting STIs and HIV, as well as lead to premature birth or a baby with a low birth weight, if you’re pregnant.

Also, watch:

“Vagina has good bacteria flora. Yes, you heard it right, there are certain bacteria that help to maintain a healthy vaginal environment. Bacterial vaginosis can destroy the balance between good bacteria and bad bacteria, causing the yeast to multiply,” says Dr Madhuri Burande Laha, consultant obstetrician & gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Kharadi.

4. Gonorrhoea

Is a highly contagious sexually transmitted infection that mostly doesn’t cause any symptoms, but can invite vaginal discharge, pain during urination, and pain during vaginal sex. In women, gonorrhoea may spread into the uterus or fallopian tubes and cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). So, treat it at the right time.

5. Vulvodynia

In this problem, women experience chronic pain or discomfort of the vulva without a known cause. The symptoms are burning, stinging, rawness, soreness, and even swelling. It needs to be tackled at the right time or else it can keep you away from getting intimate with your partner and cause anxiety.

6. Vaginal dryness

Vaginal moisture is mainly produced at the top of the vagina by one’s cervix. When women have sex, two glands (known as Bartholin’s glands) produce extra moisture to provide good lubrication during intercourse. Low levels of estrogen, stress, and using harsh products down there can cause dryness.

“It’s a no-brainer that lack of moisture during sex can be problematic. Vaginal dryness is a common occurrence in women. It is abnormal, as it can cause pain while having intercourse,” suggests Dr Laha.

Also, watch:

7. Abnormal vaginal discharge

This is a sign of infection or inflammation, such as thrush or even vaginosis. Also, it can lead to irritation and a foul smell. The colour can be greenish, pink, or even brown.

The bottom line is, if you see or smell anything suspicious down there, seek help on an immediate basis. Period!
