Getting rid of pubic hair – if you choose to do it, that is – no longer needs to be a hush-hush topic. To trim or not to trim the bush is your own choice, but if you choose to go smooth down there, you have multiple options of techniques that can leave you confused.

You may wonder whether shaving may be your best bet if the thought of bikini waxing evokes an “oops” and an “ouch” in your mind! But no matter what method you pick, make sure your pubic area along with your genitals are cleaned properly before opting for a hair removal technique to avoid any risk of skin or urinary tract infections.

How to decide the method for pubic hair removal?

Firstly, make up your mind about what you want. Hair removal methods for removing hair only to reveal underlying skin are different than the methods one could try for mild maintenance of hair down there.

HealthShots spoke to Dr Sejal Saheta, Dermatologist at Inurskn, to understand the risks involved with various techniques of pubic hair removal.

“The trouble with hair removal in the pubic area is the possibility of wide variety of complications. Depilatory creams always have a chance of reacting with your skin while methods like waxing and plucking can lead to boils and infections,” she says.

So, there are some things to consider before deciding the hair removal method:

1. Look or appearance one is opting for

While some women love feather-soft skin down there, some go bold with a landing strip! How do you want your pubic area to look is one factor that can help you decide the method of hair removal you should opt for.

2. Pain threshold

Vanity can be a pain when it comes to most conventional hair removal methods. Each person has a different reaction to pain and perceives pain differently. Waxing the pubic region can pain like hell, and even epilators pinch a little. If that’s the case, you may go for painless methods of hair removal like trimming or shaving pubic hair.

3. Skin type

Different skin types have a contrasting outcome to each treatment or method of hair removal they go through. While shaving may reveal delicate skin for some, it may give strawberry skin, redness, and itching if you have sensitive skin. Dry skin may get aggravated using hair removal creams. Therefore, using a method that’s safe for your skin type is necessary.

4. Budget for the procedure

The budget for hair removal methods can vary from dirt cheap to expensive. While a razor will be an affordable option, booking a bikini wax appointment will be pricier. Keeping a tab on the budget can be a deciding factor for pubic hair removal.

5. After effects

Shaving may not be for everybody since it can give you skin bumps and redness. In addition to this, not everyone can handle a razor with stable hands, and that raises the risk of cuts and skin peeling, making it a precarious method for some. Similarly, if one gets rid of hair by using a trimmer or an epilator, hair tends to grow back faster than waxing. On the other hand, waxing may cause the problem of ingrown hair in the pubic region. The after-effects of a hair removal method can make our decision vary at times.

Is there a ‘best’ way?

The most recommended method of pubic hair removal that’s backed by dermatologists is what most of us perhaps started with – shaving. We all may have experimented with hair removal with a razor in our hand and still fall back to the good old razor for a last-minute clean-up.

Advocating shaving is the safest choice when it comes to removing pubic hair, says Dr Saheta. “Shaving tools for pubic areas have made huge progress from just simple razor blades. I would advise investing in a proper shaving system which can trim as well as provide you a close shave with a foil-based razor without the possibility of causing nicks and cuts.”

Knowing how to remove pubic hair reduces the chances of skin irritation and infections. Since pubic hair is coarse and thick and the skin around that area is sensitive, it is mandatory to be extra cautious with the method you choose.

Permanent method of pubic hair reduction

The most painless, safe, and effective way to remove hair around the pubic region is to undergo a laser hair removal treatment in a medical clinic, says the expert.

One highlight about this treatment lies in a permanent reduction in hair growth as the laser targets hair in its growth phase and converts it to its shedding phase.

“Typically, one may need six to eight sessions of laser hair reduction spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to see a visible reduction in hair growth, followed by maybe one or two sessions a year for maintenance,” she adds.

Remember that removing or leaving your pubic hair as it is is a matter of personal choice, as much as the method you choose for it also is!
