Y’all know how every relationship requires an equal amount of effort, right? Well, this universal truth applies to your relationship with your vagina as well. After all, your vagina lets you enjoy sex and welcome new life into the world. So, it is your duty to reciprocate its goodness by doing something for it in return.

To show that you care about your vagina and build a better relationship with her, try inculcating the following changes in your life:

1. Stop douching
Using a harsh stream of water to clean up your vagina might seem like a great way to make it smell like a bunch of flowers, but you know what? You’ve been underestimating your vagina all this while.

Believe it or not, your vagina is a self-cleaning organ and supporting its natural cleansing power with douching will only eliminate the important healthy bacteria present down there, disturb the natural pH of your vagina, and make you more prone to catching an infection–as per a study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

If you’re still not convinced, you can use a MILD vaginal wash to clean up only the labia majora (the larger outer folds of the vulva) instead of douching.

2. Say no to pubic-hair removal
If you don’t like to keep matters bushy and unruly down there, trimming your pubic hair is the way to go instead of waxing or shaving. This is because your pubic hair protects you from harmful bacteria and the consequences of sweating and friction in the intimate area.

Not to mention, no hair removal also means no cuts, bumps, or ingrown hair.

3. Let your vagina breathe
Start by wearing underwear made of skin-friendly and breathable fabrics like cotton. The moisture-wicking ability of a cotton underwear will make sure that your intimate area doesn’t become a wet haven for bacterial growth and infection. Plus, you’ll be super comfortable all day.

The second thing to remember here is to go commando at night. According to a study conducted by researchers at the American National Sleep Foundation, cooler temperatures are more favourable for your vagina and we all know how letting go of your underwear can expose your vagina to all the coolness and let it breathe, right?

4. Practice safe sex
There’s no doubt about the fact that practicing safe sex is one of the most important step towards maintaining your vaginal and sexual health. The most obvious way to do so is to not have penetrative sex without a condom—unless you’re planning a baby, of course. Not only can it prevent an unwanted pregnancy, it can even protect you from urinary tract infections (UTI) and sexually-transmitted infections (STI).

Additionally, peeing after sex can help you a great deal by reducing your risk of getting a UTI according to several studies. Urinating enables any bacteria or infectious elements that might have entered the vagina during sex to flow out of the body along with the pee.

5. Practice a healthy lifestyle
Exercising and healthy eating—the two strong pillars of a healthy lifestyle—can give you a great body. But, what you eat also affects your vaginal health—especially when it comes to the way it smells.

While eating foods such as pineapple and berries has been proven to make your vagina smell sweet naturally, foods such as garlic and asparagus can literally make it smell terrible. As for workouts, adding Kegel exercises, squats, and pelvic floor exercises can strengthen your vagina.

You see–it ain’t that difficult to make your vagina happy. So, now you must ensure that you take care of your lady bits and improve your relationship with her.
