Any woman will tell you that she has definitely spoken to her girl gang about ‘preparing for sex’. What we mean is, most of us do end up discussing body hair removal before having sex, particularly doing away with the hair down there.

Call it pubic hair, pubes or the bush, this subject has always been one that requires thought and some advice. Men’s fascination with clean-shaven vags can be linked to their obsession with porn stars, but well, do we really have to go full monty to please them?

If your partner finds your pubes ‘gross’ or ‘unsightly’ then it’s time to say goodbye to him, because what you do with your body is your right. If you want to shave your bush, then it’s not a problem. But, if you are being pressurised to do so, then take charge because this man is so not worth it!

Those of you who have tried going bare down there know how much it hurts. When men can have hair around the penis area, then why is it that women are expected to be ‘clean? After all, shouldn’t this be normalised, too? What’s more, it’s very rude and presumptuous of a man to ask a woman if she shaves down there. In case he expects her to be groomed for sex because that’s just the way he likes it, then that’s him just trying to show his male entitlement.

Here’s why you shouldn’t agree to his demands

To begin with, why should a man decide what he needs to do with your body? Do women really make invasive demands when it comes to men? If they do, then that’s equally wrong. Unfortunately, the scary part is that men appear to be more comfortable with asking for changes when it comes to women’s bodies than women do of men.

Also, listen:

According to a survey conducted in 2013, around 21.1 per cent of women reported removing their pubic hair because of their partners. Another 2015 study reported that men were more likely to report a preference for their partners going pubic hair-free.

Sometimes, men demand things out of women, saying that it’s a ‘deal breaker’ for them if she doesn’t agree. Honestly, is it even worth being with such a man who doesn’t respect your choices?

In addition, there are several reasons why you shouldn’t go bare. Your pubes help to keep your private parts safe and sound. Yes, that’s true. There is a reason you’ve got them! There’s no harm trimming them to keep the area hygienic, but that’s enough. Remember, there’s really NO NEED to go bare if you don’t want to!

Side-effects of shaving pubic hair

Research suggests that removing pubic hair irritates the hair follicles that are left behind. So, you might assume that the area will be smooth and clear minus the hair, but instead, you will end up with microscopic open wounds. Plus, when irritated skin comes in contact with moisture, then it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria which can lead to boils and abscesses. Some people also suffer from cellulitis of the scrotum and labia because of the spread of bacteria. In fact, freshly shaved genitals are also at a higher risk of herpes infections, and other STIs too.

That’s why we say that pubes have a purpose because they provide protection against friction that can cause irritation and injury, and guard your genitals against bacteria and other viruses.

What’s more, research shows that pubic hair traps pheromones that increase your partner’s attraction and desire for you. But, only if men could understand that!

Here’s how you can keep it clean

Just like other body hair, pubes also trap bacteria and sweat. That’s why it is important to follow these tips:

  • Keep it clean: You need to wash your pubic area with a gentle soap every single day.
  • Use fragrance-free products: The area down there is already sensitive. So, try and clean it with a product that is gentle and has no fragrance.
  • Try and avoid tight clothing: Bush or no bush, you need to avoid tight clothing so that your pubic area can breathe. Wear only cotton underwear for utmost comfort.

So, ladies, do what you want to do with your pubic hair!
