It might trigger a full-blown panic attack, but here’s the thing about that pimple on your vagina: it’s mostly normal! Yes ladies, you might be surprised to know this but getting pimples or bumps below the belt is absolutely alright and not a cause of worry.

You see, pores in your vulval area are just as prone to build-up of dirt and oil, which then causes pimples. Even if they are pink or red and filled with white pus, it’s nothing to be panicked about.

But what causes these insidious pimples? Well, they can happen for a number of reasons, ranging from tight clothes and lack of hygiene to hormonal imbalance.

Here are the other reasons why you are getting pimple-like bumps in the area:

1. Razor burns
It is very common to experience razor burns if you shave your vulvar region especially, if you don’t use shaving cream. The ‘pimples’ that appear are red in colour, usually appear in clusters, and can be quite itchy.

The good news is that razor burns can be avoided by using coconut oil or shaving cream. Using aloe vera gel or a moisturising cream once you’re done can also calm the sensitive area and avoid razor burn from cropping up.

2. Ingrown hair
Not only do these appear more often when you’re into the habit of shaving but you’d be surprised to know that the bikini area is prone to them. The hair down there is usually thicker and curlier. Hence, don’t be scared when you see ingrown hair giving you trouble in the bikini area, which may appear as red bumps with black centres.

3. Folliculitis
This refers to the infection of the hair follicle. While a pimple happens because of the buildup of dirt in the skin pore, folliculitis occurs when the very hair follicle develops an infection due to sweat or bacteria present in the area.

Now that you know what is causing that pimple on your vagina, here’s how you can deal with them:

For starters, do not pop them: We mean it! It might make the infection spread to the areas around and before you know it, you’re going to be dealing with a lot more pimples.

Wear loose clothes: Try wearing loose clothes every day and avoid wearing tight clothes when going to bed. However, it is even more important that you cling on to your comfy, loose clothes while the zit down there is healing to give it more room to breathe.

Use warm water to cure the pimple: Soak a clean cloth in warm water and place it over the pimple for about 10 minutes. It may seem tedious but do this at least thrice a day if not more. This will contribute to better blood circulation in the area, thus allowing the zit to go away sooner.

Apply petroleum jelly: This will help against more friction from your underwear which might prolong the healing process.

However, if the pimple bursts open, it is best to consult a doctor for some antibacterial ointment which would be more suitable.

Most pimples on the vagina clear up within a week or two. However, it is best to visit your doctor when you spot one to rule out the chances of sexually-transmitted diseases such as herpes.
