If your bums are NOT allowing you to keep calm during your periods, we want all your attention now. First of all, you are not alone in this sista, because butt pain or butt cramps are very common. But at times, butt cramps also cause severe discomfort and unbearable pain. That’s when you should be careful, because there are many factors that determine the intensity of your butt cramps.

The underlying fact is – if your butt is cramping like never before, you MUST keep a few things in mind. That’s because butt aches during periods can be a sign that something is majorly wrong.

According to Dr Pratima Thamke, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar, butt pain is generally seen in those women whose uterus tilts towards the back. This is not a serious condition and can be tackled with the help of an expert.

Here are 4 major factors that can cause butt-wrenching pain

1. Endometriosis

If you have severe pain in your butt, it can be caused by endometriosis. This condition strikes when the endometrial lining begins to grow on other organs that are outside the uterus. It can be extremely painful, and you will have to consult a doctor urgently.

2. Constipation

Are you often constipated? If yes, you need to know that the accumulation of stool in the uterus can lead to the formation of endometriotic lesions in the body. These lesions sit on the pudendal nerve and result in shooting pain in the skin around one’s anus. The intensity of the pain increases during periods, and causes butt pain.

3. Muscle tension

“Do you know? Cramping and bloating can pressurise the gluteal muscles, causing tension in that area. Thus, one is likely to encounter lower back or even butt pain. Many women dismiss this pain as a normal occurrence during periods,” says Dr Thamke.

4. Fibroids

You will be shocked to know that fibroids can lead to achy butt muscles during menses. This may happen, as the uterus gets enlarged owing to the presence of fibroids. Thus, uterus enlargement can push against the butt and cause pain. Fibroids are noncancerous growths seen in the uterus that can develop during the childbearing years in women. This will need an immediate evaluation by the expert. Be alert!

A few more things about butt cramps during periods

If you tend to have butt pain during every menstrual cycle, it is a good idea to consult an expert without any delay. If the cause of pain is muscle tension, taking a warm water bath, massaging, or relaxing for some time will do the trick.

“If endometriosis or fibroids are resulting in butt pain, just follow the guidelines given by an expert. Opt for medication or surgery only after the doctor’s recommendation,” concludes Dr Thamke.
