Truth be told, the exact cause behind endometriosis isn’t clear as of now but researchers have been working on finding whether certain factors may raise one’s chances of developing this disease. Over the years, many medical professionals have come to believe retrograde menstruation may lead to endometriosis. In retrograde menstruation, menstrual blood starts to flow back through the fallopian tubes and into the pelvic cavity instead of out of the body.

A study published in the International Journal of Fertility and Sterility found that “It seems that sexual activity leading to orgasm during menstruation increases the retrograde menstruation, sending endometrial tissue to an abnormal sites and thus increasing the risk of endometriosis.”

So, having intercourse while you’re still riding the red wave may contribute to raising your risk of endometriosis. Nonetheless, there’s still more research required into the matter.
