Let’s admit it, we all know the importance of Aunt Flo’s monthly visit but we don’t exactly look forward to it. However, those who suffer from a heavy flow know that it can actually be extremely painful and bring your day to a halt.

You might hate your period days but they’re an integral part of your life and health. However, you can deal with the flow by managing it more efficiently.

The truth is that everyone’s flow is different. So, how do you actually define what’s a heavy flow? On average, the flow ranges anywhere between 5ml to 80ml. Anything between this range is considered to be normal. When the flow exceeds 80ml every consecutive cycle, one can say that they suffer from heavy periods.

If you have to change your pad or tampon every two hours or so, you could be experiencing a heavy flow. Those who experience more instances of leakage could also have a heavy period flow. A heavy flow will leave you feeling weak and make it difficult to complete daily tasks. When you experience such symptoms, it is highly advisable that you visit a doctor to rule out any serious underlying conditions. 

Once the doctor has ruled out any serious concerns, you can work towards managing it on your own! Here are some things you can do to manage a heavy period flow:

1. Switch to a menstrual cup
Menstrual cups are great for the environment and you! Compared to a tampon or a sanitary pad, a menstrual cup can hold almost three times more fluid and can be worn for up to 8 hours. When inserted properly, it ensures there’s no leakage. So, this product will definitely reduce your bathroom visits throughout the day.

2. Increase your iron intake
When you are losing so much blood, you are losing iron as well. You probably already know that iron is an essential component for a healthy body and mind. Low iron levels can result in anaemia. So, it is always important to take the necessary steps to keep your iron levels stable. Increasing your iron intake through food or supplements can prevent any such serious ailments.

3. Try herbal remedies

4. Keep a check on your hormones
When there’s an imbalance of hormones in your body, your period gets disturbed. Imbalanced levels of estrogen and progesterone causes the uterine walls to thicken which results in a heavy blood flow. Maintain a good diet and exercise routine to ensure that your hormone levels are stable.
