Whenever you hear of sexual health, do you feel like your mind puts a ‘forbidden content’ tag to it? Well, you’re not the only one shrugging off the taboos around this rather delicate subject. To begin with, most people confuse sexual health as a way to avoid the risk of sexual diseases. Well, that’s not all! Sexual health is not only about your sexual well-being, but it has more to it. Good sexual health also means freedom from violence and discrimination, mutual respect and safety.

Dr Niveditha Manokaran, Venereologist and Dermatologist, who is known to shatter taboos around sexual health and HIV, took to her Instagram handle to share a post. The post she shared was about the rules you got to take seriously for your sexual health this year and for many new years to come.

Dr Manokaran’s interesting post had 6 slides where she talked about the things that are essential to maintain if you’re sexually involved or about to get on with it.

  1. Consent is essential

Well, consent is crucial when it comes to sex. It’s really a good idea to be clear on ‘yes to sex’ before things get too hot and out of hand. It’s necessary to confirm even if it appears like a yes. Take no for a no seriously!

2. Communicate

We said it a million times, and saying it again – communication is the key! To communicate on the hush hush subject, the ‘shy shield’ goes out of your window. Communicate about your likes and dislikes under the sheets. Set boundaries and limits to let your partner know how far are you willing to take the sex. If you’re feeling a little bit adventurous, share your fantasies too!

3. Fair game

Raise your hand if you and your partner both have orgasms during sex? You’re doing it right! Sexual health is all about making sure both you and your partner have got the pleasure you needed and both have enjoyed it. Well, as rewarding as it sounds, both need to hit the climax during sex. Period.

4. Cuddle in

Rule: Engage in post-sex affection! Cuddle in bed. Don’t rush to leave your bed whether it is a one night stand or a regular partner. It’s advised to not be in a rush to run after sex. You got to show some humanity. A one-night stand does not mean you should stop being nice.

5. Carry condoms

Well in this case, why should girls have all the fun? Protection against STIs is both your responsibility irrespective of your gender. So, don’t wait for your man to buy protection, you can buy regular condoms or female condoms too. Take charge of your sexual health. ladies!

6. Contraception

This enough advocated subject is a sexual health rule you can’t break! Prevention against unwanted pregnancy is your right. Choose a reliable contraception, if you’re not ready to have a baby. That said, condoms are the best non hormonal contraceptives and are widely available. It’s better to stay safe than sorry!
