It is food for thought but breasts seem to be a “fascinating” subject for both men and women. And breast talk is incomplete without nipples, isn’t it? Of course, they warrant all the attention in the world, because well, they are essential for breastfeeding. But there’s so much more to them! Oh, and did we tell you that every woman has a unique pair, and NO, that isn’t wrong in any way.

So without further ado, let’s touch upon the various facets of nipples, and bust all those myths that make you oh-so-embarrassed about them. Let’s start with the kinds of nipples (we told you).

What are the different kinds of nipples?
  1. Protruding: As the name suggests, these kinds of nipples point outwards and are elevated by a few millimeters. They can harden when they are cold or even stimulated.
  2. Flat: These nipples are seemingly less pronounced, and most often, the entire nipple blends into the areola. They can look completely flat, even when aroused or in cold weather.
  3. Inverted: In this case, the nipple retracts inwards, instead of out. If this has always been the case, there’s nothing to worry about. But if there’s a sudden change, you must see your doctor as soon as possible.
  4. Unclassified: They are multiple or divided.

Also, keep in mind that both nipples do not have to be of the same size; they could be different.

Yes, nipples can be of different colours

The nipple or areola colour can vary from person to person, but anywhere between pink to dark brown is considered normal. The colour can change due to hormonal fluctuations in the body, and also when you are pregnant. Several women feel that it goes darker when they are about to conceive. It isn’t necessary that the colour will be restored post-pregnancy,” shares Dr Bindiya Kukreja, a Delhi-based gynecologist, with HealthShots.

Inverted nipples are normal

Most of the time, women get worried if they have inverted nipples. There’s nothing to worry about if they have always been like that. In fact, sometimes, they no longer stay inverted, especially when you are pregnant or breastfeeding. And if you have concerns about breastfeeding your child with inverted nipples, worry not! You totally can. In fact, when your baby sucks, your nipple will eventually draw out.

Nipple soreness and cracks are nothing to worry about

As women, our bodies go through intense fluctuations throughout our lives. But more so, when we are about to have our periods.

“During this time, suffering from nipple soreness is quite normal. You could also feel a subtle pain in the general breast area. If the pain is beyond your tolerance, you could ask your doctor to suggest a painkiller,” adds Dr Kukreja.

Cracking of nipples is also quite common, and normal. Tight workout clothes and intense exercise routines can cause that to happen. Breastfeeding can also cause cracks in the nipple. Worry not, just use a good moisturising cream, and you will be fine.

So ladies, don’t lose your sleep over your nipples. They are normal!
