What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the term “sexual problems”? Something that keeps sex from being satisfying or does it bring a positive thought? Yes, it’s the former, ladies. Remember, most women undergo some or the other sexual health issue at some point in their life. Why you may ask? That’s because women’s sexual health is complex. And it is really important for women to keep an eye on their sexual and reproductive health for the sake of their general health and well-being.

For the unversed, sexual health can be associated with your sex life that is supposed to be fun. But is it for you? Painful sex, lack of interest in sex, or even dissatisfying sex can be a result of sexual health issues.

Let’s tell you about a few sexual issues that you need to watch out for:
1. Orgasm problems

If you talk about an orgasm, it can be defined as a feeling of immense pleasure and excitement. We’d wish for it to be easy, but unfortunately it’s not and requires patience, effort and practice. Dr Madhuri Burande Laha, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Pune tells HealthShots, “There are a majority of women who may notice this problem. It can be classified as primary, that is when a woman has never had an orgasm. Secondary is when a woman has had an orgasm in the past, but cannot have it now.”

There could be many reasons that are stopping you from experiencing sexual nirvana aka the big O. It could be your anxiety at play, your distracted mind, or maybe because there’s not enough foreplay.

2. Low sex drive

There are times when low libido makes it hard for you to get in the mood for sex. Truth be told, there are multiple reasons that can cause this. And it may be time for you to go for a proper check up. According to Dr Laha, “Lack of knowledge about sex, feeling stressed or depressed and relationship problems can be the culprits. A reduced sex drive is seen during pregnancy, after having a baby. It could also be due to tiredness, diabetes, alcohol and drug abuse, or mental trauma during times of stress.”

Furthermore, your libido could be low, owing to a drop in testosterone levels.

3. Vaginismus

Vaginismus is an involuntary spasm of the vaginal muscles that occurs when something enters the vagina. Needless to say, it can make sexual intercourse a complicated affair for women who have this condition.

“There will be immense pain in the vagina during intercourse. This occurs many times in newly married girls, also because many people link sex with pain. Yes, it can be painful for the first few times, but it can be resolved through psychological counselling, treatment of infection if any, as well as examination by a gynaecologist to rule out any block in the vagina. Also, counselling needs to be given to the male partner,” says Dr Laha.
