Ahhhh…. sex! On most days, sex and its many wonders are a mystery. Does the G-spot really exist? Can vaginal intercourse truly make you orgasm? Can he actually last as long as he claims? Burning questions all–the answers to which we pray you find. But there’s one question that has really divided the room: Is having sex on your period a good idea?

We share a lot of smirks when it comes to getting down and dirty when aunty flo is in town. After all–it is considered to be messy, filthy, and smelly, to say the least. But hey! No matter how icky it may sound, having sex on your periods comes with an obvious advantage–ample lubrication.

If you haven’t travelled down that road–you’re not at fault sister! Because haven’t we all been preached the sermon of infections, hygiene, and such over and over again? So as a result, most of us haven’t even breached the topic with our partner, let alone have intercourse.

That of course, hasn’t stopped a slew of questions from popping up in our head. Questions like: if sex during periods is such a no-no, then why do we crave sex the most during this time?

Wait! Did we just hit your inquisitive spot? Are more such questions plaguing you right now? Are you thinking of Googling them? Well, don’t bother, because we’ve got you covered! We got Dr Veena Aurangabadwala, a gynaecologist at Zen Multispeciality Hospital in Mumbai to answer the seven most Googled questions about having sex on your periods. You’re welcome!

So let’s begin!

1. Can I have sex during my periods?

“Sex is a physiological response, which is at times heightened during menstruation,” explains Dr Aurangabadwala. She suggests that making out, foreplay, and intercourse during menstruation helps in relieving lower abdominal cramps and body aches. So, it’s totally cool to satisfy your urges during the flow.

2. Is it safe to have sex when I’m bleeding?

That’s exactly what we were thinking! So is it? Dr Aurangabadwala says: “Blood is a good medium for bacteria and viruses to grow. Also, the cervix is partially dilated at the time of menstruation, which allows easy access from the vagina into the cervix and uterus.”

In short, irrespective of your bleeding vagina–you need to use protection. No protection means higher chances of contracting sexually-transmitted diseases. Moreover, a contraceptive device like a condom keeps unwanted viruses and other bugs away that can upset your vaginal biome.

3. Can I get pregnant if I have sex on my periods?

The obvious answer that comes to most of us is a big-fat NO! Except, Dr Aurangabadwala suggests that while chances are scanty, there is always a possibility.

She says: “Ovulation and bleeding can occur simultaneously for women who have irregular menses”. So, it is likely that pregnancy can come knocking at your door. The simple solution? Use a condom!

4. Can it hamper my period flow?

No siree! Dr Aurangabadwala suggests that having sex can in no way impact your flow. So take it easy ladies!

5. Can having sex on my periods possibly have any benefits?

Well… befriending sex while you’re chumming can help you phase out dreadful cramps. Plus, it’s a mood booster too, suggests Dr Aurangabadwala.

6. Should I take some precautions while having sex during my periods?

Absolutely! Dr Aurangabadwala suggests:

  • Play it safe and use protection.
  • Keep good vaginal hygiene
  • Don’t using a tampon or vaginal sponge while having sex on your period

7. How can I make sex on my periods less messy?

Good question! If you don’t want to paint the town red, Dr Aurangabadwala suggests:

  • Talk it out with your partner… don’t leave an element of surprise.
  • Keep wet wipes and condoms handy.
  • Spread a towel on the bed. You don’t want to get down to washing fancy bedspreads post-coitus.
  • Keep it simple and missionary. Experimenting with new positions can complicate the situation.

Hallelujah sister… now you know it all! So the next time, don’t be afraid to safely sex it up–even if the red wedding is upon you.
