A successful relationship requires time, effort and trust from both partners. But a relationship can go downhill over a period of time due to various reasons such as lack of effort, loss of passion or excitement, becoming too comfortable or routine, lack of communication and understanding, taking each other for granted, and not prioritising the relationship enough. To help you improve your relationship and grow together, we have listed down a few relationship mistakes which you should avoid.

Relationship mistakes to avoid

Here are some common small things someone might do unconsciously that harm their relationship, and some alternatives:

1. Ignoring your partner’s needs and feelings

Instead of ignoring your partner and his/her feelings, try to actively listen and communicate with your partner. Show empathy, validate their feelings, and be willing to compromise.

2. Taking your partner for granted

Never ever take your partner for granted! Instead, show appreciation and gratitude regularly. Recognize and acknowledge their efforts, and do small things to show them you care.

4. Avoid conflict or burying your emotions

Instead, address issues calmly and respectfully. Use “I” statements to express your feelings and needs, and try to find a resolution that works for both of you.

5. Neglecting self-care or individual interests

Make time for yourself and your own hobbies and passions. This can help you feel more fulfilled and energized, which can improve your relationship as well. Avoid neglecting your needs because until you’re not happy, you can’t make someone else happy.

Here are a few changes to improve your relationship with your partner

Start with yourself: Make a list of your partner’s qualities that you are thankful for. This will help you focus on the positive attributes of your relationship instead of dwelling on the negative.

Say thank you: Make it a habit to express your gratitude regularly. Say “thank you” for the little things they do for you like cooking meals, doing the laundry, or taking out the trash.

Do thoughtful things: Small gestures like leaving a love note, making their favourite meal, or giving a surprise gift can make your partner feel appreciated and loved.

Embrace imperfections: Accept your partner’s flaws and imperfections. Nobody is perfect, and focusing on their positive attributes will help you see the good in them.
