We all want to feel loved, enjoy companionship, and feel a sense of belonging. However relations, be it romantic, familial, or friendly, could be far less rewarding than we would ideally like them to be. This happens when you are constantly feeling insecure in a relationship due to the other person’s lack of availability and accessibility. Also, if the other person in a relationship projects their work or personal commitments to be more important than yours, then that is a classic sign of a one-sided relationship.

What is a one-sided relationship?

Essentially, a one-sided relationship is a situation where one person invests disproportionate amounts of time, energy, and resources into a relationship, as opposed to their counterpart.

The issue is that a one-sided relationship triggers insecurity, anxiety, and inner conflict for the person who has invested their all in the relationship. So, instead of enjoying the fruits of companionship, the more giving person instead ends up focussing on being liked and accepted. At the same time, none of their efforts ever receive reciprocation from the other side.

Friends, romantic partner(s), or family members, could increase your stress levels by indulging in behaviour that pulls your morale down, is ignorant and insensitive to your needs, and adversely impacts your self-esteem.

Can one-sided relationships turn toxic?

A one-sided bond with a partner, friend, or family member will only make you feel isolated and lonely. Such a person won’t acknowledge your needs and focus more on their own wishes. This can range from choosing which movie to watch, to the subject matter of conversations. It may feel like walking on eggshells as you give up your individuality to try and win someone’s affection. In such a relationship, you will constantly experience emotions of rejection and inferiority.

This toxicity of one sided-relationships can have an adverse impact on your health and wellbeing

Rise in stress levels: A one-sided relationship can make you feel anxious, as a lack of support and reciprocation can increase the release of stress hormones.

Diminished self-esteem and confidence: When you feel let down, rejected and ignored, it is easy to wonder if something is wrong with you. This could take a major toll on your self-esteem and confidence.

Health problems: A study conducted by UCLA found that stressful relationships lead to significantly high levels of protein that causes inflammation in the body. Over time that can cause serious health problems.

So, ladies, be mindful of such toxic one-sided relationships and consider taking active steps towards your wellbeing and self-esteem.
