Every dark cloud has a silver lining. So does Covid-19. It may well be called the bane of our times, but reflect a little more and there will be some reasons why you may be grateful for the forced pause it brought around in our lives. It gave everyone a little window into how important mental health is for holistic wellness.

We may rightfully crib about the negative aspects of the pandemic and how it hampered our lives. It had undeniable consequences which adversely affected every aspect of our lives – from mental health or our physical health. But it also changed our perspective of life and our way of living.

From taking health, fitness and wellness more seriously to engaging in self-love practices; from learning a new skill to engaging in a beloved hobby, there’s a lot to be grateful for that has happened in the past 2 years. We need to appreciate what life brings with it and find the positive outcome of every situation. This not only helps in self-growth but also helps us in navigating our emotions, says mental health expert Dr Samir Parikh, Director, Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, Fortis Healthcare.

“We need to appreciate everything that happens in our lives, both in terms of what we learned through our hardships and also the positivity we experienced with which we can move forward in our lives. There are a lot of brighter things we learned from the pandemic, the most important being, ‘Every difficult phase is followed by ease’,” Dr Parikh tells HealthShots.

7 positive ways to look at the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on mental health:

1. You can attain the unachievable

“Science has grown and proved its significance by producing the vaccines in such a short span of time. The medical fraternity, the researchers, the doctors clearly proved the efficacy of science by producing the vaccine. It all comes down to our innovation, how remarkable we can be when we work in unity. This is not only in terms of the growth of science but even as individuals. You can achieve  milestones if you put in efforts, innovation, hard work, and unity even in adverse situations,” explains Dr Parikh.

2. Helping each other unconditionally

Whether it is through social media, neighbours, friends or families, everyone learned to help each other irrespective of anything. Social media was used positively to help each other, spread news, regardless of the relation or financial status. Everyone united to deal with the pandemic. Everyone worked over and above their potential to help each other, and that is a very inspirational aspect, says Dr Parikh.

3. Meaningful relationships

Parikh comments, “More people got connected to their extended families, cousins, friends and acquaintances became more connected. We realized that social media is beyond the followers, likes, and views, and meaningful relationships actually matter.” Therefore, the relationships became more valuable and meaningful.

People spent more time with their friends and families, which was getting lost in the hustle-bustle of life in pre-Covid times. People started to indulge in serious relationships and understood the true meaning of family time. Also, the pandemic has been an eye-opener that we are all equal, and being connected with each other can only help in overcoming hardships.

4. Adaptability

“Whether it was adaptability that happened in telemedicine, adaptability in digital transformation, adaptability in terms of work from home, all of these aspects changed our lives drastically. Wearing masks every time we head out of our house, self-isolation, and relying more on online shopping, all these are aspects of adaptability,” points out Dr Parikh. This clearly showcased people their skills to adapt and change in adverse situations, and enhanced our ability to get through the thick and thin of life.

The next time we have a problem in our lives, we will have the strength to deal with it all.
