Colours are all around us—and we won’t deny, their absence in our lives causes us to feel sad and gloomy. You must be wondering, if that’s for real? Well, it is ladies, because as Pablo Picasso has rightly said, “colours, like features, follow the changes of the emotions.” Different colours evoke different feelings, and they can affect your mood, feelings, and emotions. Unsurprisingly, certain colours have been associated with lower blood pressure, increased metabolism, and an improved quality of life.

But before we get down to the colours that improve happiness, let’s first learn about colour psychology.

What is colour psychology?

It was in the year 1666 that English scientist Sir Isaac Newton conducted an experiment, and found out that when pure white light passes through a prism, it separates into all of the visible colours. Moreover, each colour has a single wavelength, and can not be separated into other colours. What’s more, we already know that when certain colours are combined, they give rise to new colours.

Much more research needs to be done in this area, but colour psychology is everywhere today. From brands to food concepts, it has made a significant impact on people’s moods, feelings, and behaviours. Each colour holds different connotations for different people ‒ there are warm colours like red and orange that can make someone feel fuzzy, while it could trigger anger in others.

Blue is a colour that’s associated with feelings of calmness, but some could feel sad looking at it.

How to improve mood with colours
1. Blue

This colour represents calm, gentleness and peace for most people. It is also a colour that is effective in stress management. Yes, it’s true — it lowers blood pressure levels, reduces anxiety, slows down your heart rate, and makes you feel happy! You could choose to wear blue-coloured clothes or paint your room in the right shade of blue (lighter ones) to experience positive emotions.

2. Green

This colour is largely associated with nature, and it’s comforting in the truest sense of the word. This colour is soothing and calming, and helps to calm down anxiety. Some feel it evokes in them a feeling of compassion, while others feel energized and optimistic, when they spot this colour or wear it. Do not go for a bright shade of green; instead, go for beige greens and pale yellow-greens to reduce stress.

3. Pink

Another colour that promotes happiness and joy is pink. Even Feng Shui says that pink helps to diffuse anxiety and fills a room with positive energy. For some, the colour pink reminds them of all the flowers that are in full bloom, making them feel refreshed and optimistic. You could wear the colour, to add a dash of youthfulness and look extremely stylish. Again, a neutral shade or baby pink exudes calmness; not the dark varieties.

4. White

This colour is mostly associated with purity and freshness, and makes people feel at peace with themselves. White is bright and can also add a sense of space, making a person feel positive in many ways. The reason that white is a preferred colour is because it symbolises new beginnings or a fresh start.
