We are living in unprecedented times—none like we’ve ever seen before. No wonder, this pandemic has accelerated our anxiety and made us feel like ticking time bombs. There’s so much pressure to juggle personal and professional responsibilities—attending Zoom meetings, while cooking a meal for your family can get a tad bit overwhelming, especially on some days.

And that brings us to the subjects of mental health and self-care that have been brushed under the carpet since time immemorial. Unfortunately, it took a pandemic to turn things around, and finally these areas are getting the attention they deserve! So, if you find yourself looking for ways to calm your senses, or find steps to reduce anxiety on Google, you aren’t alone!

I tried several meditation techniques during this lockdown, but if there’s one thing that stuck with me, it’s music meditation. Believe it or not, it de-stresses you in no time, and without much effort.

So without further ado, let’s understand what music meditation is all about, and how it can benefit you

What is music meditation?
We’ve all danced our hearts away, especially when we are in a low mood. And guess what? It has helped us every single time. Now, when you blend music and meditation, it can prove to be a great way to beat stress almost immediately.

If you think healing with music is something new, you’ll be surprised to know it dates back to ancient Greece, when it was used to tackle mental disorders.

Now, you might think a combination of music and meditation sounds odd. Well, I thought so too, but several Google and YouTube searches later, I found myself doing it. And I was so thrilled I decided to try this technique.

All you need to do is listen to soothing music (search for binaural beats), so that the frequencies in it resonate with the vibrations in your body. And then as you keep meditating, your body starts to slow down, and you feel calm and stress-free.

Here’s the right way to do music meditation
First of all, choose a meditation music that resonates with you. This might take some time, because YouTube will throw you at least a hundred choices. I am not even kidding! Just make sure you choose music that has a slow tempo, and without any lyrics, because you don’t want to be humming along while meditating!

PERSONALISE NOW

Next, sit in a comfortable position and relax. Now, there’s no hard and fast rule here that you need to sit cross-legged or lie down. Just do what makes you feel good. Once you’re comfortable, close your eyes and then take deep breaths through your nose.

The hardest step is to stay focused on the music. If you have too many thoughts in your head, try and redirect your attention to the present moment. Pay attention to the sensations in your body, and try to feel the music.

Practice this for 15-20 minutes every day, and you’re good!

Benefits of music mediation
Music meditation is said to reduce mental health disorders—including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, dementia, and other behavioural issues. I, for one, can vouch for its impact on my anxiety. As I kept practicing this technique, my anxiety kept going down, and today I feel so much more control of myself!

Also, listen:

Some studies have gone on to show that practicing music meditation can also help in pain management. This is because relaxing music reduces a person’s sensation of pain, and on the other hand, produces endorphins, and builds immunity.

All in all, there’s so much music meditation can help with! So ladies, plug in your headphones, find a comfortable spot, and calm your senses!
