The Covid-19 pandemic introduced all of us to work-from-home culture and we have all become very comfortable with the idea of sitting at one place all-day long. But we’ve got to keep it in mind that it’s not healthy. It will only make you feel lazy and lethargic. However, now offices are opening and we are all gradually going back to our old lives. And if you’re still suffering from low energy levels and fatigue, you should know that there are certain habits which can drain your energy, and you may not even know about them.

However, if you want to improve yourself, following a healthy lifestyle is really important. Sometimes, we don’t even realise that we’re making mistakes.

Health Shots spoke to Dr Vikrant Shah, consulting physician, intensivist, and infection disease specialist, Zen Multispeciality Hospital Chembur, Mumbai, to find out the habits that can take a toll on our energy levels.

Here are 9 harmful habits that drain your energy:

1. Dwelling on the past

It is better to get over your past and concentrate on your present. Do not hold any grudges or be angry all the time. Doing so can affect your health. It can drain your energy. So, just try not to carry that emotional baggage from the past because you can not change anything in the past so just move on and look forward.

2. Worrying

Are you one of those who tend to worry about even the slightest things? You should avoid doing so. Worrying will not solve any problems. “If something is not in your hands, there is no point in worrying about it. If there is something you can do about it, take action on an immediate basis. Worrying is a waste of energy. So, try to concentrate on what you can control,” said Dr Shah.

3. Overuse of smartphones

Do you also tend to scroll through social media right before bed or as soon as you wake up? Unfortunately, this is also one of the reasons that drain your energy levels. Screens – from smartphones to TV – suppress the production of sleep hormones because of the blue light in the devices. Thus this can lead to disturbed sleep or lack of sleep which can make you feel tired and lazy.

4. Not sleeping well

Your body’s clock craves consistency. But a stressful working life can lead to sleepless nights. And sleep deprivation can directly impact your energy level the next day. To boost your energy levels, make sure you sleep well and if you sleep for very less hours at night, then no hack can save your energy.

5. Negative thinking

“If you happen to find problems in every single thing then it is who you are to suffer. You are not only draining your energy but your friends and family members’ energy too,” said Dr Shah. It is not productive, try to have an optimistic approach in life. Also, avoid being surrounded by negative people as even that can also drain your energy.

6. Unhealthy diet

If you always feel sluggish and low on energy, you have to check your diet. If you are eating too much sugar, carbs, trans fats, and junk foods, you are giving away your energy levels. Be thoughtful of your diet and make sure you include healthy foods which are rich in green vegetables, protein, healthy fats, and fresh fruits. And be mindful of the portion also.

7. Too much complaining

“It is not at all pleasant to be around someone who keeps nagging and complaining all the time. Try to find a solution to any issue instead of cribbing about the matter,” said Dr Shah. Try to do something productive instead of draining your energy by complaining.

8. Dehydration

Well, if you are not feeling your best, it is important to make sure you stay hydrated. On one hand, fatigue is the first symptom of dehydration and can have a huge impact on your brain function, mood energy levels, and more while on the other hand, drinking enough water regularly can help stay energetic throughout the day.

9. Overthinking

Overthinking will not help you with any better outcomes. Instead, it will drain your energy. In fact, it can even cause unnecessary anxiety and stress. To avoid this, you can practice yoga and meditation. These are proven ways to get rid of mental exhaustion.

To lead a healthy life you need to stick to a healthy routine. And a healthy routine means a healthy diet, an effective workout routine, and make sure you practice meditation for at least 15 minutes a day to keep the mental stress at bay!
