“Just because a thought is in your head, doesn’t mean it is real..!”

Anxiety, in simple terms, is a fear or apprehension about what is yet to come. It is the only emotion we have, which is from the future. The event has not happened yet, we are only using the process of imagination to distress tomorrow inducing fear, inefficiency, and negativity. In that sense, it is a serious misuse of imagination. If your beautiful mind is capable of imagining negative thoughts, it is certainly capable of imagining positive ones – let’s find out how!

In order for you to experience any emotion, you have to have some thoughts going on in your mind consciously or unconsciously and the emotion (anxiety in this case) is only feedback to the quality of that thinking. 

Most of us have had an experience with anxiety, it is incredibly common, especially in these unpredictable and uncertain times we live in. However, it is all the more important that we remain calm in the face of a threat to have a resourceful mind and a phenomenal immune system. 

Some simple tips to achieve this is to:
1. Focus on what you want rather than what you don’t want

Whatever you imagine and whatever you focus on, has the potential to be true. Ask yourself, how does it serve you to think negatively? 

2. Remind yourself that anxious feelings are temporary

When you are feeling overwhelmed, remember that these feelings are temporary. Find a way to distract yourself and indulge in an activity that gives you pleasure – anything that gets the mind to focus on something else.

3. Picture the day ahead

Close your eyes and do this exercise. Picture the day ahead (or any event you are anxious about) going well with ideal outcomes. Imagine it turning out most perfect for you. Feel the joy and contentment and continue to deep breathe in that state until you feel better. It is an act of visualization and you have the power of imagination. 

4. Deep breathing

Take a deep breath, expanding your belly. Pause. Exhale slowly to the count of five. Repeat four times. Congratulations! You have just calmed your nervous system! There is enough research to prove that proper oxygen sent to the brain can immediately bring a sense of reason back into your mind, allowing your anxiety to diminish.

5. Exercise 

It is probably the best antidote to anxiety. It does not matter what kind of exercise, you should do physical activity as  long as the heart is pumping at a good rate. Our physiology has a direct effect on our state of mind. 

We don’t know what tomorrow will bring for any of us, we only try in vain to be fully prepared for a just-in-case situation or try to control the outcome when a better thing to do is to be resourceful, at least you would have a better chance to deal with any situation.
