Make note of these 5 things that must be a part of your mental health first aid kit

Just like there’s a first aid kit to tackle physical health issues, there must be one to make you feel better when your mental health is not in the best state.

We’ve all heard of first aid kits, but they are almost always for physical injuries. For instance, if you’ve cut your finger or injured your knee, someone or the other will be able to help you out. That’s because most people know how to deal with such situations. But what if we tell you that a mental health first aid kit is equally essential? Shocked, surprised or both? Well, don’t be because you never know when you might need it!

According to several mental health experts, there are several things you must have as a part of your mental health first aid kit. Excited to find out? Let’s go!

1. Running shoes

Yes, it’s true. Running shoes can work like magic–what we mean by this is group exercise. Research has shown that it is pretty effective in dealing with mild to moderate depression. Go for a run, dance away to glory or indulge in some aerobic exercise. It doesn’t really matter what you pick, because all these exercises will help to break the cycle of negative thoughts that’s associated with depression.

2. Headphones

Don’t we all know how music helps to instantly uplift our mood? So, create a go-to playlist that peps you up, every time you are down and low. Research suggests that music therapy is certainly a great strategy to tackle depression, and also helps to improve focus. What’s more, if your stress levels are low, you are likely to be more involved in your career and relationships.

3. Phone numbers of a few friends you love

There’s nothing more important than a strong support system. Just having a few numbers as part of your mental health first aid kit will remind you that you can always pick up the phone and speak to people you love. You can also meet your friends if they are up for it! We have another idea—you can also plan a walk or a jog with them. Hello endorphins!

4. Essential oils

Don’t believe us? You have to try it out to know how amazing it will make you feel. Choose an oil that you like, and pamper yourself. You could add it to your bath or also use it with a diffuser. Buying scented candles is also a great way to make your living spaces nothing short of heaven. Once you get used to this, you just can’t get rid of this habit (we aren’t asking you to!).

5. A diary and pen

This is an old trick, but always works. That’s exactly why we think it should definitely be a part of your mental health first aid kit. Every time you feel negative, how about writing down your problems on paper? It will help to validate what you’re feeling. If you are overworked and that’s stressing you out, write a list and walk away from it for some time. You can also try and give yourself a break, if that makes you feel better. What we are trying to say is writing down what you feel always puts things into perspective.
