Can’t focus for long? These can be the possible reasons for your distraction

Distraction isn’t superficial. It has a deeper meaning, which is why it will be better for your mental well-being, if you address it sooner.

Do you always lose your chain of thought? Do your colleagues and fellow mates always find you daydreaming? If yes, my dear lady, you need to seriously look into the matter, because this might not cost you your productivity but your mental well-being too. That’s because staying distracted all the time isn’t normal.

Distraction can be caused by many reasons – if you haven’t eaten your meal properly, if something is weaving in your head, if you are emotionally hurt, etc. and to an extent, it’s normal as well. But if it has become a recurring affair in your life, you need to keep a check on it.

As per Dr Rahul Khemani, a well-known psychiatrist, one of the reasons for distraction is boredom. “Boredom is a universal experience; all of us have felt it at some point or the other. There’s never a single day that either we or someone else hasn’t said ‘I am bored’,” told HealthShots.

He adds, “But boredom is actually in a deeper meaning a myriad of complex feelings and emotions, it’s much more than having nothing to do or laziness and it’s the commonest cause of getting distracted.”

Here are some prominent reasons for distraction that you might be ignoring

1. If you are dealing with mental health issues like anxiety, depression, dyslexia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), etc, it seems that distraction becomes its by-product.
2. When you are emotionally procrastinating way too much, you usually feel distracted. Basically, when you are emotionally drained, you keep on piling up stuff and leave it for the last minute. That happens because procrastinating makes you feel tired and does not let you focus properly on anything.
3. When we don’t feel adequately challenged or when the activities we are performing have become too monotonous, it forms a repetitive cycle of behavior.
4. When we are stuck in a constant, never-ending loop of deadlines with no real break, it leads to annoyance and frustration.
5. When we are unable to focus due to reduced attention span in conditions such as attention deficit disorder aka ADD.
6. When we don’t have enough motivation or the task isn’t rewarding enough.
7. Another big reason behind distraction is multi-tasking. If you are doing too many things in one go then there are high chances that you will not be able to focus on one thing, especially, mentally. You feel overwhelmed all the time and unable to perform to your full capacity.

Some quick hacks to deal with it

1. Self-care routine: Find time to take care of your physical and mental health such as exercising daily, eating on time, and adequate sleep.
2. Switch your routine: Break your cycle of boredom and find creative ways of performing your daily tasks
3. Consult a mental health professional to address any issues with regard to your emotional health. Therapy for the mind is like a spa for the body and meditation for the mind.

The point that you need to note here ladies is that you need to be doubly sure when it comes to your mental well-being. You can’t afford to let go of a single sign, even if it is as harmless as a distraction.
