Hypertension is known as high blood pressure. Now, it is one of the most common illnesses but the most dangerous thing about it is that it is often referred to as the ‘silent killer’. Hypertension, or high BP, is most common amongst the elderly. Hence, it is extremely important for us to keep a strict eye on the blood pressure levels of our parents.

It is believed that many are at a high risk of developing hypertension and the serious consequences of untreated high blood pressure which can cause damage to the cardiovascular system. In fact, one-third of the population has unidentified high blood pressure. In such a situation, the best way to keep a check on your parents’ blood pressure level is to go for regular check-ups and to invest in a device to measure it at home.

Here are 8 signs and symptoms of hypertension that you need to look out for in your parents:

1. Severe headache

Hypertension headache occurs when blood pressure level rises significantly. If it becomes too severe, it can lead to a migraine that causes a throbbing sensation on one side of the head.

Hematuria is more common in people with hypertension. It is basically a small amount of blood in the urine.

4. Nosebleed

The nose has delicate blood vessels and a sudden increase in blood pressure can lead to nosebleeds. Hence, hypertension is associated with bleeding from the nose.

People who have hypertension might experience irregular breathing and an aching sensation in their chest which can be intense and uncomfortable. In fact, shortness of breath is one of the initial signs of hypertension.
