Postpartum recovery is not just about one or two days, it takes time. For some mothers, a few weeks are enough, but for others it might take months. But the important thing to note is that the time after pregnancy is critical for the new mom, and all the major steps need to be taken for a healthy living.

Initially, mothers feel pain in their vagina, it becomes difficult to even walk properly. Also, due to the fluctuation in hormones, they face major mood swings. Apart from that, they may experience many postpartum problems such as excessive bleeding after delivery, hair loss, swollen breasts, stretch marks, vaginal discharge, discomfort during sex, postpartum depression, constipation, haemorrhoids, uterine and bladder infections, difficulty in weight loss, and even urinary incontinence.

To tackle all this, they need a foolproof recovery guide that can make this period easy to handle. To know more about the postpartum recovery plan, we got in touch with Dr Pratima Thamke, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar and she has suggested a plan that will make the recovery much faster.

1. Dealing with scars

You can clean your c-section scar gently, with the help of soap and water. Avoid rubbing too hard. Then, try to dry it by using a towel and apply an ointment suggested by the doctor. Don’t exert yourself after undergoing c-section. Do not exercise vigorously. Let the scar heal, and you can then resume your daily routine.

2. Managing those aches and pains

“If you have body ache or leg pain, then you must use heating pads to take care of the aches and pains. Hot showers and massaging regularly will also be a good option. Don’t go overboard as your body needs rest, and will take time to get back on track,” suggests Dr Thamke.

3. Try to regulate your bowel movements

Try to include fibre-rich foods in your diet that will help you get rid of constipation. Drinking a lot of water will also help you regulate your bowel movements. Consume fresh fruits, veggies, and even whole grains in large quantities. You must avoid straining while in the loo, because remember those c-section scars haven’t healed. Also, try to avoid alcohol and caffeine.

4. Breast care is a must

For swollen and achy breasts, you must opt for a hot compress, ice packs, and even a massage. While breastfeeding, try to wear a nursing bra. In order to treat those cracked nipples, you will be required to apply a cream advised by the doctor.

5. Opt for kegels

Postpartum kegel exercises can do the trick by helping you get your vagina back in shape. There’s no better way than this to tackle urinary incontinence.

7. Sitz bath also helps

“Take a small tub, just sit, and get rid of that postpartum pain. Avoid adding salts and herbs, as it can lead to infection, as your vagina is very vulnerable at this point. Consult your gynae to recommend some soothing add-ons,” recommends Dr Thamke.

So all you new mommies out there, ensure that you take these tips seriously, and make the most of them.
